Wanted to post a thread dealing with a caravan to SDAC-18 ONLY rather than clutter up any of the other SDAC-18 related threads. Posts are to be kept b.s. free here in order to plan an organized caravan (no one wants to rummage through meaningless posts).

Below is a map image showing the route those of us from SWPA will be taking. It'd be really cool to have a nice long caravan causing people's heads to turn and to all roll in together at the hotel (where my directions end on this map).

Ideally, if anyone is interested in meeting up to form a caravan, one of the better spots to hook up is right below the L in North Olmstead, OH on I-80. Another good spot west of that to pick up more would be in Toledo, OH of course, where many junctions meet. I know we will be stopping in either between Lambertville and Monroe for some photo opportunities since we'll be by the Great Lakes.

Note: Construction may alter the end of this route slightly, but I won't know that unless A) someone from around there more familliar with the area under construction posts - and/or - B) the newsletter informs the best way to go.

Again, looking forward to this event very much and this thread is to gather interest in forming a caravan out to the event. If this applies to you, let's hear from you and please keep it on topic pertaining to the caravan, meeting spots, and times only.

What day? Friday? Need to pick a ETA at various spots, for people to meet. I think your trip is planned for Friday and I won't be going until Saturday. So If anyone else is interested in a Saturday Caravan, (leaving from Akron area), PM me and we can start another thread, so as not to cluter/confuse this thread.

The Buckeye Chapter has set it up that we will be leaving saturday at 12 noon from the service plaze just west of the #140 exit on the Turnpike. Anyone passing thru about that time can roll out with us if interested.

Where exactly are you coming from? I-80 is pothole city and when I was up at State College everyone talked about how much of a nightmare it was to drive. Would I-76 be relatively easy for you guys to travel on to head west and then meet up with I-80 in OH where the two meet?

Yeah we should be in Pontiac by the latest 2 PM. We're opting to leave early so we have daylight to work with IF something were to happen with our cars. Sure don't feel like being a couple states away at nighttime on the shoulder of the road haha.... In the daylight, at least a problem could hopefully be diagnosed. Plus it's safer.

Last year, SDAC started after we got out of school for the summer.....this year, its taking place over the last 3 days of school. I know Lasky and I will be pushing our "personal days" taking mon-wed off that week, so we cant leave until after school.....so it looks like it probably wont work out. No biggie.....we'll have 5 days to cruise when we get there.

We'll be comming from the Philadelphia area.

Well, since some folks from local are probably not watching this thread, you may not get better directions. I have only been through the I75 North closure a couple of times, and it is certainly a PITA. If you like Interstate cruising, the map at the top of this is a good way to go. But, if you want a couple of shortcuts to save time, I will now attempt to give you some turn by turns once you get off I-275 instead of going down 696. After all, 696 is all constructioned up too. Especially, where it meets 75. The Northbound ramp was closed there the other day, and it took me a long time to go farther East on 696, find a place to do a U-turn and take the other ramp Westbound on 696 to get to 75 North.

Take 5N, instead of 696. It is the same exit. Go to it ends. Turn right onto Pontiac Trail. Take it until it ends at Orchard Lake. make a left onto Orchard Lake. Take it until it ends in Pontiac. Make a left in downtown Pontiac just after you go under a building and parking deck. (It's the only building you will drive through). Make a left and go a couple of blocks to University Drive. make a right on University. At this point, you can take University or M-59 to get to Chrysler. Now, this doesn't get you to the hotel (I don't know which hotel is the host) but it gets you straight to where the car show will be. Hope it helps. You want to avoid 75 and 696 if you can.

If you want a more direct route than 275, take 75N, to 96W, to 94E, to 10N, to 8E, back to 75N. That is the construction workaround. it is only a few turns and probably is about the same distance as if you were driving straight up 75N, since it turns all over the place downtown anyway. But, if the construction signs dump you off onto 24 (Telegraph) you can take it North to 94E and pick up in the directions in the start of this paragraph.

If you cruise mapquest while reading this, it will make sense. (At least I hope it does.) Good luck getting here this time. It is the worst construction I have seen here since I moved here in 2005.

CSX173
06-03-2008, 09:23 AM
Um.... after talking to some of my buddies here at work, I stand corrected. You CANNOT get to 96W going N on 75. So, either Telegraph (24N) or it looks like you could actually continue on 75N all the way to Dix (Exit 40) and take it N to Southfield (39). Turn left on it to 94E. Then 10N to 8E to 75N. Looks like the Hwy. dept. wants folks off at Telegraph, but you can actually stay on 75N a bit longer (I bet traffic would be lighter too).

Well I disagree somewhat with what you posted here Tom. The directions I had in the newsletter still stand as the best way. (275/696) However at the time that was printed the new work on 696 had not begun and the ramp closures were scheduled to be completed early this month.

Folks, do not under any circumstances take I-75 or I-94 into the city of Detroit. If you have a mishap or breakdown there, you will find yourselves in neighborhoods that you really don't want to be in.

Right now, I-75 north into Michigan to I-275 north, or I-94 east to I-275 north, to I-696 east looks to be the best bet. Then instead of going all the way to I-75 north, get off at US-24 or Telegraph Rd north. Telegraph north of I-696 is a great road 4 lanes each way in many places, very little construction and few traffic lights. Take that to Square Lake Rd east to Opdyke Rd. The motel is right there.

BTW, the reason we don't suggest Telegraph Rd (US-24) all the way from I-75 north, is that in many places in the southern stretch the road surface is poor. Also there is a ton of traffic lights in that area. To drive 30+ miles up Telegraph would probably be worse than being in traffic on any of the Detroit area freeways.

And lastly, sorry Tom but, folks do not take this route.

Take 5N, instead of 696. It is the same exit. Go to it ends. Turn right onto Pontiac Trail. Take it until it ends at Orchard Lake. make a left onto Orchard Lake. Take it until it ends in Pontiac. Now, this doesn't get you to the hotel (I don't know which hotel is the host) but it gets you straight to where the car show will be. Hope it helps. You want to avoid 75 and 696 if you can.In this stretch, there are many spots that may be confusing to folks not familiar with the area. And if traffic is congested it only gets much worse.

I am still trying to get good maps & directions on the SDAC website, it is just that time is not on my side right now.

There's plenty of places to do so. Actually, would New Stanton be a good place to meet up (location of SDAC-17 last year)? in other words, will you be coming down the turnpike in order to catch I-80? If so, you'll be passing right by the New Stanton exit and you saw how many restaurants were out there! Bob Evans..... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

It'd be a lot of fun to do a caravan thing though. That is one thing I missed going to our first SDAC (15) and didn't get to see last year since we hosted it here in SWPA.

Someone at SDAC 15 (Think it was Wallace) pulled an enclosed trailer with his diesel Ram, and then attached a tow dolly to the trailer. The dolly had an Omni on it. Just don't have to back up!

Oh no..... trying to give our noble town a bad name???? :D Well, he's kinda right. Just don't get caught in a couple of places after dark. I have some co-workers who found that out the hard way. However, I do a lot of driving downtown in some of those neighborhoods, and I have never been involved in or even witnessed anything violent unless the sun is down. But, the casino district is OK 24/7, as long as you stay within a few blocks of the casinos. Just don't want to scare you away from helping our local economy in the downtown area. :eyebrows:

And, I would still have to say that 696 sux right now. 5N to Pontiac Tr. to Orchard Lake is a lot less hassle. Even 5N to Maple East to Telegraph North is good. I was driving from Auburn Hills to Wixom every day the past 2 months. 696 East on a Friday night will not be fun.

Tom when giving directions for folks we try to keep folks on main roads that are well lit and well marked (and hopefully in good repair). That is one reason I don't like the local streets you are suggesting. I used to travel Orchard Lake when I worked out in Commerce Twp, and east of Telegraph it is like a side street and goes through one of the worst neighborhoods in Pontiac. I don't want to direct anyone to go through there.

696 East on a Friday night will not be fun. But it still beats Chicago which took us over 5 hours to get across on Friday afternoon for SDAC-14. :eyebrows:

Our tentative plan is to leave King of Prussia, PA at 4 am. ETA to the New Stanton Bob Evans according to GoogleMaps is 8:04am. Assuming we get there on one tank of fuel, we might get there a bit earlier. I'm gonna PM you my cell phone number. If you send me yours, and it doesn't look like we are gonna be held up at all I will let you know by around 7 am.

The four hour timetable assumes an average speed of 63mph. We might do 70, but probably not much faster than that in the interest of fuel economy. It also assumes no bathroom breaks.

Mike & I spoke this morning and the crew coming from the east will tentatively be arriving in New Stanton around 8 AM for breakfast at the Bob Evan's. Steel City guys will be meeting up with them around that time and we'll depart for Detroit after everyone is done eating! Looking forward to it!!!!!!!

It's gonna a good time!

Hitch a ride in somebody else's shitbox with more comfortable seats! Then you can split the gas!

Cry me a river :p I've got comfy seats, but a tired suspension.

10 1/2 hours for me, but I think the guys coming up from FL have the long ride.

Actually I have give some thought to possibly making it to P-burg and hang with those fella's overnight to give my a$$ a reast and head out with them in the morning, but I haven't pursued it any further....

Oh, and Gary, if you're such the stud, I'll swap you rides for the journey if by some chance I do go...

Put the comfy seat back in it for the ride out. I'll haul the race seat for ya!

I'll probably be joining the breakfast club on Friday morning. Originally had planned to be further along, then again it's good to travel in a group.

Troy, you are MORE than welcome to come out the night before. Why don't you do that with us?!?!?!?! You can crash in my basement I don't care!

Denny, sounds good you'll be joining us as well! Always good to have Uncle Denny in a caravan (as long as fuel pumps hold up and vapor lock doesn't occur).

That should read especially if fuel pumps give out and vapor lock occurs! After all, someone had to take a picture of you taking a video of your brother while he was calling for help!

I have 2, for me they are not a lot of help. I'm usually playing the music too loud....
They work great if you are chatting a lot and they are in your hand.
