the other night i was bored and decided to check out craigslist.com. i searched for "Shelby" in the Denver area and found '87 Shelby CSX #667 for sale. there were no pics in the ad, and the description simply said "runs good, needs work, high miles, $1000/obo." i had NO intention of buying a car :o but i called a few times out of curiousity that night and got no answer. i just assumed it had already sold. the next morning the owner called me back and my brother and i decided to go down and check it out. the car turned out to be wayyyy nicer than we were expecting. unfortunately she didn't really want to take less than $1000 despite the ad claiming "obo" but i eventually got her to take $950. i didn't mind though since it was in much nicer shape than i was expecting anyway. it has 185,xxx miles but sure doesn't look like it. all of the Shelby specific items are there except the Centurion wheels. right now it has Cavalier Z24 wheels with 205/60s (ugly!) the interior is really clean but the front seats are kind of worn. the dash looks near perfect, the rear seats look like no one ever even sat in them, the headliner doesn't sag at all and the carpet and door panels will clean up pretty easy. there isn't one dent in the car and it was repainted a few years ago. no cracks or damage to the bumper cover or grille either. there is one good sized rust hole on the trunk floor right above the muffler....which is strange because the rest of the car is utterly rust free. even the area near the e-brake cable and under the doors, hatch etc. have absolutely no signs of rust. it's completely bone dry except that one spot :confused2:

after we looked at it a few days ago we had to come back home and pay for the car via paypal and then we went back down today to pick it up after the paypal cleared. i just got home with the car a few minutes ago. it ran great the whole way, engine runs really smooth, shifts perfect, clutch feels great, brakes feel nice etc. it definately needs a new passenger side motor mount, new tires and shocks/struts and a basic tune up but nothing major.

anyway, here are some pics from the other day:

btw, the car had been sitting next to the previous owner's house for 2 years. the Colorado plates expired in 2006!

Very nice! :thumb:

I'd say the muffler had a hole in it, and that's what cause the rust hole, exhaust is very corrosive.

I had a Subaru GL, that when I bought it, the tail pipe/muffler had been rotted out for a while, and half the bumper support had literally rusted away, as in, half of it was gone, because of the moist/corrosive exhaust.

Nice grab! That is nice for $1000. I kind of like the rims....but would look better with center caps(no bowtie). :thumb:

Gotta tell you, I'm not hating the Cavi wheels as much as the Intercooled sticker accross the nose:( Actually, the wheels kinda look right on there:thumb: Good ole Craigslist...

thanks! i'm going to remove that intercooled sticker right away, as well as the DODGE decal on the windshield. i agree it looks stupid right there. i need to order a decal kit from Positive Impressions. i'm probably going be putting some pizza wheels on it until i can find some Centurions, and definately buy some new 205/50s for it. i don't really have any immediate plans for it right now. eventually it would be nice to build a stout 2.5 CB with an A555 but i want it to remain as factory looking as possible.

do the decals on the doors look really dark to anyone else or is it just me?

I'm pretty sure from the factory the door-rocker decals are one large silver graphic, only the lower ground effects and the bumpers were actually painted.

Looks good and welcome to the 87 CSX club! :D

Really good find. The 87's seem to be more common than I thought and in your neck of the woods at that. For some reason all I can find around my area are 88's.

Yes it does look very nice looking out my front window. It is begging me to drive it but my brother is out of town and took the keys with him. DAMMIT!!!

Man that car looks awesome for the price, good score! I dig the wheels too, but I think they are more like the Berretta Z-26 wheels...If you were closer, I'd take them off your hands.

Again, nice buy!

a friend of mine has been running those wheels on his tona for years. If you flip them around the other direction, they look alot better IMO.

thanks! this is the first time i've been able to get online for almost 3 weeks, sorry for the late post :o

anyway, i've barely even seen the car since i bought it. i just moved back home to Gillette and the CSX is still sitting down in Laramie 250 miles away. i should finally be able to drive it up here next weekend though. i'm going to get it cleaned up and take some more pics soon. i will be buying a nice set of pizza wheels for it that i found in a local j/y. hopefully i'll be able to find a nice set of Centurions for it later on but i won't be able to afford those for awhile yet. besides, the '87 CSX looks pretty cool with pizza wheels like the TIII prototype car has.

btw, i went to Denver the other day to see NOFX, and right across the street from the hotel i stayed at was a Papa John's....with an '87 CSX sitting in the parking lot! i talked to the owner (who works there) for a little bit i think his car was #692? nice looking car. i'm not sure if he's on this forum but i know he's on coloradoneons.com. i think that is the only other '87 CSX i have ever seen.

anyway, i'm not going to be doing too much to the CSX in the near future; i got some bills to pay off not to mention my R/T needs a few things.

I ran the pizzas that come on the TurboZ for a while on the 87 CSX (they had treads). Looked decent. Would have looked better if they weren't so shabby.

heh, was just looking through the owner's manual and at the last page someone wrote: "engine rebuilt 177,xxx miles with new clutch" the car now has 185,xxx so it's pretty fresh! too bad it's not a CB. definately planning on a CB 2.5L and A568 for this thing later on.

Just ask JT. It doesn't have to be a CB to hold up.. These days its more like a myth buster experiment which is stronger.

looks alot better now with dark gray GTC wheels. the tires are 205/50.

i need to replace a clip for the rear bumper before i can put it back on. i removed the "INTERCOOLED" sticker that was on the front grille and removed the "DODGE" sticker that was on the windshield. i still haven't washed the car since i bought it....should look better with a wash/wax!

I think you got a nice car for that price. The body looks straight! Take it to get a re-spray and buy a new set of decals and your good to go. Check out my 88 CSX-T! I posted a thread on it.

thanks, i was just checking out your CSX-T about an hour ago, very nice :thumb:

i haven't done much at all to the car since i bought it, haven't even driven it much besides bringing it home. it now has a really nice set of pizza wheels that i bought at a salvage yard for $10/each (the GTC wheels were my brother's). i checked the cam timing today and it is 1 tooth advanced, gonna fix that tomarrow. it's definately a nice/straight car and it runs good but it really needs new tires, brakes, axles, motor mounts, trans mount, struts, steering rack and a heater core so i have my work cut out for me. i might be installing Caravan front brakes tomarrow if i have time.

unfortunately my Regal GS also needs alot of work so the CSX is kind of on the back burner for now :( i wish i could just sell the GS and focus on my TDs.

Yeah I know how it is. Im going to be selling my other vehicle which is a 98 mustang gt and then hopefully get my car painted. I also just got the rack and pinion on my car fixed and I need a new cv axle but I think in the long run the CSX is gonna be better/funner to drive because parts are usually cheaper for these cars than newer ones.
