Pictures of an L body 555 linkage setup with the heim joints. Maybe this would be more appropriate in the kc...

Here is what I did for my 525. Bought some rod pre-threaded and added these connectors. They are spring loaded to allow for quick release.

The only problem I have with the heim setup is that if you need to work on your car in that area (starter, exhaust, steering, etc.) you have to get wrenches or air tools in that area top and bottom of the connector and that is a tight fit. With this, you can just pull the piece back and you're good.

This has been on the car for just under a year and there have been no problems.

I wish I had taken the time to do that to my car instead of the cable shifter. My next L-body will have that setup. Would either of you mind writing up step-by-step instructions? Size of joints or part numbers would be helpful. Thanks!

Here is the one I wrote a while back. Wish I had taken more pictures, but I was too involved in getting it done! hehe Give me a shout if you need some help Kevin. :thumb:

How did I miss that? That's great! If I can find another decent shape Shelby Charger/GLH, I'm going to do that.

all that work and you guys didn't make it a short throw shifter while you were under there?

For me, I'm going to do some relocating of the shifter inside the car and focus on the short throw at that point. It crossed my mind, but priority one was fixing the shifter so I could actually get home in a gear OTHER than the one I got stuck in. It sucks to have the old plastic shifter stuff fall off and be stuck in third all the way home with traffic lights.

I did the short throw mod on mine, and the problem I ran into was the rods somehow didn't have enough leverage to get the transmission into fifth gear. So I had to relocate one rod back to the original mounting point, and then everything was ducky. Downside is the fore/aft throws are nice and short, but the side to side throws are still stock. Makes for a bit of a learning curve when it comes to speed shifing, I tend to miss third a lot. :(

I had step by step pics when I was doing the build, but some of them got lost when I got my new computer. I still have some, but not enought to do a step by step.

BTW the last pic posted is mounted incorrectly. The rod end farthes to the right in the pic should be mounted on the upright part of the shift tube, and the shift tube itself should mount where that end is. Just in case anyone was confused.

Its actually not connected there, it is just resting on it. But its hard to tell by looking at the picture.

Well then I guess it was I who was confused . . . :o

That looks great. The more I see these setups being done the more motivating it is to get a 520/555 in my charger. Well only time will tell. BTW minigts where did you get those sweet spring loaded ends?

Details are in this link, but the site is here: http://midwestcontrol.com/

My thread has all the part numbers and sizes for everything I used.

SORRY for hijacking the thread Tyler! Carry on!

Haha, no problem. Someone asked me to email them all the pictures of my setup and I couldn't get them to attach to my emails, so I started this thread just to show pictures. Im sure the more people chime in and post their own ideas the easier it will be for other to create their own setup.

I'll have to post up the pics of the setup that Rob (shadow on this site) made up for me, we're planning to run the stock plastic ends for now and convert to heim joints after we make sure it works properly.

I have a quick question, did you use all the components from you 525 or did you use them from the 555? (i.e. the brackets that hold the heim joints)

Thanks

The two lever brackets that the rods actually attatch to are straight off an L-body 525. The pivot bracket above the differential cover I fabricated, and the rear mount bracket with the other pivot pin is a hybrid of 525 and 555 brackets.

I don't have a pic of the other pivot mount, but it's basically just a piece of angle iron with two bolt holes cut in it and a pin welded on.

I believe there was a write-up on how to fab the brackets somewhere.

There was a pretty good one on Boosted Mopar, but I took a somewhat different route to make use of the PB bobble strut instead of the dogbone mount.

Anyone want to build me a setup for my GLHT? I just bought this POS and the stock shifter rod has popped off twice leaving me stuck.

I truely hate the shifter setup in this car.

Or anyone have any other suggestions? Is there a cheap quick fix that will prevent this from happening again?

Where are you located? If you live close to Memphis I'll help you build one. Did mine in an evening and was driving it same day.

are those the clips that keep the rods from popping off?

also does anyone have the p/n for the black round piece that clips onto the rod that goes to the shifter?

supercrackerbox

Yes, that's the part number for the clips. As for the other part, I'm not exactly sure what you mean . . .

its a weird black piece that goes onto one of the shift rods that then attaches to the main shifter rod, its hard to explain, I'll try to get a pic in the morning.

That's the main big rubber one that is a male end piece. I accidentally cross threaded that one one time, sucked. :(
