I have 2 413 trannys, 1 is a 89 with the large spline axle and the other is a 86 or older with the smaller spine axle. I am doing a tranny swap with these trannys and was wondering if I could swap out the diffs to keep the same axles in each car?

Yep, but you need to swap the pump also, :(

OK.... Why the need to change the pump? Seems like they should be mutually exclusive to each other, but that might just be showing what I know!

The TC's have different mounting tabs for the different years so if you want to use the 89 in the 86 car, the TC won't bolt up to flexplate and vice versa.

So, for sure I need to swap out the pumps?

Yes, or if you have both trans out and side by side, you can look at the TC differences and maybe redrill the flexplate. I've never had them side by side to compare.

86 should have the TC with "flats" and 4 bolt flexplate- no need to swap pumps /converter and flexplates.... Same as 89. :thumb:

85 had the 3 bolt converter.

Thats funny I thought the 86's had went away with the tabs and went to flats.. At least thats what I read on the dodge garage which doesn't necessarily make it so, but if the specs aren't right on that T1 to T2 adapter diagram on there I'll be pretty much screwed. I was wondering the same thing as I'm putting a drive train in an 88 lancer from an 86 Turbo Z. There is an 89 trans to go with it, but since I wasn't sure I had a flexplate that was any good i figured better safe than sorry and just put the 86 trans in for now.

Some '86 trans were small spline and some were large. I imagine the pump differences changed mid-year also.

Ok, I think your right, I did some more digging and 86 seems to be the weird year. I know 87 and up your fine but 86 is ?????? lol!

Also if it's an "or older" with the sealed off diff, will a big spline diff go in it??

The diffs all interchange. The sealed units mean you just have to run gear oil for the diff section and make sure you put some in,

I just got the 86 pulled and I might be wrong on the year cause it has a 3 bolt TC. I am unsure of the exact year of the tranny. It has a stamp on the top that says Mopar performance reman. trans and has a date of 1994. I can take some pics and post them to show you the tag.

OK.. Now I see.. yeah some 86's might have got the 3 bolt TC. The I'm getting is a 4 bolt with the flats. Still has small spline though..

Here are the pics of the trannys, they look the same to me. Maybe someone can tell me something about the tag on the left tranny (86?):confused2:. I'll get some more pics when I get the diffs out.

Externally, your not going to notice anything.

Post up shots of the TC's and maybe both the different flex plates, then we can come up with a solution.

That tag is just used by Chrysler so they know what they have.

Here are the ics of the TC, I see now how they are different. So can I just pull off the cover of the tranny and swap the gears out?

Yes, you can but you can't swap TC's without swapping the pumps over. You might be able to redrill the flexplate though, maybe take a pic of the 86 one you have.

I guess what I was meaning was the gearing for the pump. I was looking in the ATSG book and it looks like I just need to switch out the gear in the pump that connects to the TC.

Exactly, you just switch the PUMP,
