Around here in southern PA. 11,000-13,000 would be asking price 2wd holds it back. 100k is good, and they have done alot of high dollar repairs.
23 mpg is about right driving easy.

$11,000-$13,000 is a good estimate given the information you've posted. Does the truck have power locks, power windows, tilt steering, cruise, etc.?

I don't know if a 24 valve truck would get 23 mpg. I get around 19.5 mpg out of my 1990 D-350 regular cab dually. The previous owner of my 1997 3500 dually claims 22 mpg. Both are 12 valve trucks which tend to get better fuel mileage than the 24 valve trucks do.

Do you really need the power of a 24 valve? Mine makes 215/440 from the factory. It has been "turned up" and makes more power than I need. Also, the 12 valve trucks aren't computer controlled. Modding them is cheaper too. I like the 12 valve trucks myself, but they are almost impossible to find in a early 1998 Quad Cab.

I'm guessing it has power stuff... here are a couple e-mails on it

Black auto quad cab with 95K on it. 2wd posi sport edition. Has new injection pump from bluechip diesel. Upgrades include Edge EZ, J hook in turbo(boosts 40 pounds), Pressure lok in trans, 3.55 gears, and matching fiberglass black topper. Gets 21mpg in winter and 23 mpg in summer to work and back(no lie). Makes 700 lb/ft torque. New 4 inch exhaust. Ziebarted. New front brakes, shocks, and ball joints. New injector pump cost $2100.

It is a shortbed truck. Has a slider rear window. Agate(grey) is the
interior color. Have a set of winter tires/rims(currently on truck).
Skinny(winter)tires and the posi it is a snowmobile. Pressure lock fixed
the trans after the mods. Cummins diesels need head studs after about
75pounds of boost. 40 pounds is mild tune. All my mods are mostly
engineered for fuel economy. The extra power was only bonus. Truck is only
about 310 horse in it current tune. Lots of torque due to small stock
turbo. 2001 autos had the smallest turbo(no lag). Trans oil has been
changed with mopar synthetics 4 times since new. Amsoil in rearend x 3. I
ordered the truck when new. Every option except for leather interior,4wd,
and the super wide towing mirrors(which were not heated). Standard heated
mirrors are plenty wide except for 102 inch enclosed trailers and I have a
set of extensions that can go with the truck to fix that. Motor has always
had Rotella T sythetics in it. Except for the first 20k had regular Rotella
to encourage good breakin. Truck gets 18.5 mpg towing an open trailer with
a 1974 dodge monaco on it (weighs 4400).

Sounds like a pretty nice truck. It's probably an SLT which would include all the power options. I assume the "topper" is a camper shell style topper instead of a tonneau type cover. That would add another $500-$1000 to the value depending on what type/brand. What's the asking price?

Here is a pic from a few years ago... asking $14,500 last time I talked to him. I'm waiting for my phone to ring now tho. :)

Even with the mods, $14,500 is a little high. I'd offer him $12,500 tops.

If you get it, tell me how those "snap on" mirror extensions work out. I've been looking around for the later fold out mirrors, but at. $500+ per pair, I think I'll go with the "snap ons" at $50 per pair.

I hear you on the price, if it were 1/2 as many miles and rust free I would not blink at $14k

BTW, This is what I've been looking for for a while so if you see any like this for like $10k in TN, LMK... ;)

...and if I do get this one, those mirrors might be for sale unless he sells the enclosed with it :D

JT that is almost the perfect optioned truck :thumb:

Good luck with the price negotiations, I think 12.5 is a good number!

I'll keep my eyes peeled. The 1998 and newer mirrors are different than my 1997 turck's mirrors.

Its the truck I wanted to buy in '01 when I got my Dakota... funny thing the seller is who I got my Dakota from ;)

Cool Kevin, let me know what you find.

I Just talked to the would be seller and he has changed his mind, so no CTD for JT :( Long story but the short version is that he has 2 daughters and wants a true 4-door instead of the '01 quad cab. His brother has a newer truck but wanted too much money for it... they dont get along and have been going back and forth... well his brother makes him an offer he cannot refuse so he shoots me the e-mail to sell me his. The next day his brother sold the other truck to someone else, so this one is no longer for sale. :(

Well, trying to be optomistic, a hidden blessing maybe? With the cost of diesel lately a nice '03 2500 Hemi/auto ext cab short bed would be cool too :thumb:

JT, I found a couple really nice ones when I was looking for mine. They were duallies. Are you dead set against a dually? Are you looking for something more along the lines of the one you were considering?

Pretty sure a dually wouldn't work for JT, he's got a tight driveway and getting Joes dually in and out of it was a chore last year before the Mopar nats. Although he's a dealing man, so if a really good price on one came up he might go for it.

Oh, and you mentioned the whole identification by year thing, here are my tricks:

94-95: Chrome 6x9 mirrors (or painted grey on work trucks). Look at the rear bumper, there are three notches on the bottom side where the ball mounts are. 95 was the first year for extended cab.

96-97: Similar to 94-95, but got a new rear bumper, this one has a single long slot under the ball mounts.

98-01/02: Black plastic mirrors now, new dash, availaility of quad cab. From behind have the same rear bumper as 96/97, but the rear sliding window changed to a smaller opening. 99 and up got a plastic front bumper, different grill and headlamps on Sport models.

02-04: New body style on 1500's, 03 was the start of new body style on 2500/3500's

05: Same as 02-04, but the "dodge" is gone from the tailgate replaced with a rams head logo.

06-07: Got a restyled front end and interior, Mega Cab option (1500 Mega's are on a 2500 Chassis...). The moster Durango-esque headlights give the newer trucks away as do more rounded tail-lights.

03-04.5 where the 305hp 555tq Common rail and 04.5 up the 600 series.
