View Full Version : Why Is My Rampage So Freakin Heavy??

Ok, so as you can see from my sig, my 84 Rampage has a TIII and a 568 in it, both much heavier than the OE drivetrain. I weighed it today on a very accurate drive on scale (used at the track to determin minimum race weights) that should be pretty much dead nuts on (WTF does that mean anyway?) Here are the items that are 'adds'

TIII
568
SBEC wireing harness
SL rims/195/55 tires (gotta weigh more than the stock 14"steelies)
PolyBushings rear bar
Class III hitch with 3 support bars
Fiberglass bed cover (maybe 20 lbs?)
Spirit RT HVAC box (much larger than the stock L body unit)
dual core IC

Actually, when I sit and think about all the adds, it makes more sense. I guess thinking it was 2300lbs was wishfull thinking:o

Any guesses for the total, 9 gallons of gas, no spare, no jack, without me in it??

2300 would be awesome. My GLHS was 2550, so I'm guessing since you are really disappointed... 2850?

Alan, don't you have upgraded brakes too? and 5 lug conversion? If so, they weight more than stock.

2800lbs.

Ah yes good catch, the list of heavier than stock parts just keeps growing:o

Come to think of it the custom lower front core suppport is a giant chunk of angle iron, way thicker than it needs to be:o

Someone guessed within 6lbs of the weight already but who was it:D?

I'll guess $1 Bob! ;)

Ding ding ding. Winner at 2706 Jason:thumb:

My Rampage is a fat pig, it needs to make more power, hmm maybe this will help, it sort of fell out of the sky today and ended up in my possession:evil:

I guess I can see it, with all of the added stuff and not gutted. I know I had a Pb rear bar in hand and ditched it for stiffer rear springs because of added weight(after talking to csracer).

I just want to know how Jason guessed it, well he has like 30 dodges and prob weighed them all or you guys share secrets?, lol

No doubt! Before the roll cage was added my lightened Z weighed ~2750 ... with me in it :D

What, you don't want me to do without air conditioning and power steering do you;)?

I also picked these up today to bring up the rear and inch or so for DD and 3 or more inches at the track:evil: they weigh 18lbs total. Also a six point cage is in the planning stages so it's not getting any lighter. Hey, maybe I can go for the first 3,000lb L body benchmark:lol:

Yep, Ca DMV made me get a weight certificate when I registered the Ramerati (to prove that it weighed less than 3000 lbs above which the fees are more); it weighed in the 2700s too.

Weight adders - big front brakes, S Daytona power seats, CB with heavier Masi crank, 520, rubber bedliner, S Daytona 16" pumpers, sound deadening mats in doors/under dash, big speakers on package shelf, what else?

Keep adding parts, Alan, it'll be at my 2800lbs mark sooner or later.

BTW, let me know if you want to sell that TIII turbo.

Empty Jim Beam and Coke bottles and wiring harness in the bed?:D

Uh, that Beam bottle wasn't quite empty. Made for a nice refreshing treat when I was cleaning out my portable storage, I mean the bed of the Rampage:lol:

Someone else may have to chime in on this, I've seen different numbers but mine has had the TIII/568 since 1994 so I don't have a 'pre turbo conversion' weight for ya. Glad to see you are making progress on yours 54:thumb: You've had it what 2 weeks? Digging right into it eh:eyebrows:?

Thanks again bud. I will not be making any REAL engine changes anytime soon, so I am looking at some weight reduction as soon as I get it drug to my house.

Research is the biggest step, then part collection, hard labor and then comes the pimping.

I have some plans that I am going to carry over from my experience and stylistic views.

I hate chrome and anything that does not compliment the lines of the vehicle.

Anyways, I need to know the general weight of one of these, but I will eventually take it to the track to run it and weigh it.

Just for the attention!

Getting heavier, added 6 lbs of 'Dynamat' to the driver door yesterday while I was in there replacing the window scraper. The door closes with such a lovely thunk now, I sat in it last night just opening and slamming the door shut:love:

Hey bud, good mod, but just a heads up. No need to add so much to take away the thunk. For years, I have been adding a small strip to the inside and a few keys places to the outside panel.

I understand if you are doing it more for sound insullation. :D

Also, I feel the dynamat and other products are over priced.

Their product is an adaption of what Home builder have been using to seal the bottom plate when framing and the windows for years.

It is called Sill Seal and you can pick it up at your local Home Depot or Lowes or wherever. Some is foil backed and some is not.

ALOT cheaper than dynamat.

Window wrap makes a 6" wide Al backed product that I have been using for awile that I picked up for $10 for about 50 sq ft.

Protectowrap makes a similar product that is like $30 for the same amount.

I had heard 54 that you could just throw a strip here and a strip there to dampen the vibrations that cause the unwanted noise but I figured more is better right:D? I actually didn't take a pic of the final install cause nearly every hole on the inner skin is covered now (except the ones to access window hardware;)) And I figured there would be a bunch of 'why the F did you do that' responses:lol: I didn't pay the $$$ for Dynamat but bought an ebay substitute that Simon found and posted a link to a couple years ago. It was 1/3 the price of Dynamat IIRC:thumb: I have about 45 lbs of this stuff left in two rolls and I'm sure most of it will find it's way onto the Rampage. It is gonna be one quiet ride from the cabin:) I don't hear the fuel pump anymore since putting some around the new fuel tank:D

Back when I first registered the Ramerati, DMV required a weight certificate to prove that it was a light truck and not subject to greater fees; according to a certified scale, it weighed about 2700 pounds with miscellaneous junk behind the seat, full size spare, a 50 pound or heavier bed protector mat in it, and the heavier Masi engine, 520 trans and SLH brakes. So, it's a 2600 pound trucklet.

I still have to do the doors and under the front carpet in the GLHS.

I have the entire inside of the rear sail panels done along with the entire rear area including over the wheels and under the seats.

I did remove all of the stock stuff so it isn't all added weight but either way I think it is worth the 40lbs....

Yep, and more is better to a point, I think you have reached the overkill status, but no worries!!!!:D

The stuff I suggested, is still cheaper.:clap::D

All these years I've been wondering why the Charger seemed so much heavier than some of the other L-bodies out there. After reading this thread I don't feel so bad. :D
