power steering belt/tensioner???????

SO I bought my car wrecked, the belt tensioner was already broke. I bought a new one and installed it. Now the origional belt that was on the car wont fit. I depress the spring in the tensioner/pulley as far as it will go and the belt is still no where near fitting. I even tried setting everything on, then getting the belt started on the last pulley, I then tried turning it over by hand to get to belt to slip on. When I did this I heard the fibers in the belt start to snap, so I quit. It is like it is physically impossible for this thing to go on. what the deal? Im an srt newb, are there any tricks, this doesnt make sense.

Ive replaced that belt twice. It should go on easy as pie. Something isn't right.
