How does a nice Cam sound in a 2.2/2.5 Turbo? I haven't really heard any cammed 4 bangers, do they have a nice lumpy idle like on V8s? Also, anybody have any sound clips of a glass pack on a 2.2/2.5?

a "good" cam doesn't idle all that different. a crazy n/a 4 banger cam lopes like a cammed v8

I have 272s in my 4G63T powered Mirage Turbo, they sound HAWT. Nice lope. But I haven't had a cammed 2.2/2.5 Turbo, so I can't comment on that. :o

I've never heard a cam'd 4 popper sound like an eight.. And I come from the "other" land of PR dragsters...

A well built 4 sounds like crap.

You wont hear a lopey turbo vehicle. The lope is caused by overlap which leads to wasted boost going right out the exhaust valve.

Sorta "VROOM!" at one end and "tick, clack, tick, clack, tick" at the other...

my 2.2 has the stage 5 cam from fwd. it idles at about 1000 rpm. it sounds almost exactly like my friends evo with staggered 272/280 cams. it is through a 3inch exhaust and a borla xr-1. it moves alot of air and you can actually hear my 35r spooling through the exhaust

Exhaust will change the sounds of a car more than a cam. If you want a lopey cam, get the old MP 413 turbo cam. Probably not the hot ticket for performance tho.

Idle is sort of ...

bluderp-bluderp-bluderp-bluderp-bluderp-bluderp
and touch the gas lightly and it will be like...
bludderr-dudder-dudder-vroooooom.

That's what I mean by HAWT, it sounds like crap, LOL. My crappy idle is an indication that my Mirage no longer stops pulling at 6400, and pulls past 7500 instead.

Under 1000 RPM, mine lopes.

Im running a taft S3 cam on a 2.5L G head, and it doesnt sound much more lopey than a stock/88 tbi cam....I also have the S3 cam advanced for more bottom end ATM, so maybe once its back straight up and lost some more vaccuum it might sound like the car is cammed up, but for the most part, there is not much difference.

S2 was a noticeable difference with some chop similar to an S60, S3 was quite choppy, although made more mild with some tuning.

I agree. A cammed 4 cylinder lumpity lumpity pop! Sounds like my wife's '91 Grand Am after I cut the cat off = arse!

My 97 Neon has different cams in it, not sure what but I think they are crane 14's or something like that. It idles lopey and I think it sounds kinda neat.

yea, a customer of mine has a Neon R/T and not sure what is in it cam wise but it sounds pretty choppy at idle. still trying to get him to turbo the thing instead of sraying it. i like the way it sounds and he says it pulls pretty good up top too.

'88 turbo cam with no muffler sounds pretty good. It isn't like my stock camed 440, but it still sounds really good for a 4 banger ... nothing the eeeehe eeeeeheehehehhheeeehhhhhe of a Honda. I don't mind the sound of an F1 car, an Indy car, or even nice motorcycle, but that damn fart pipe on a Honda just sounds like trash.

272s don't lope that much, nothing like a hot n/a cam....

we've always had to set idle around 900-1000 to get 272s smooth

Camm'ed 4cyls sound half as good as camm'ed 8's

sounds like a higher pitched v8. my buddy's evo sounds pretty cool, kinda like saying potatopotatopotatopotato....

Just thinking, from the back end, they probably sound a little different depending on what header they've got, 4-1s would sound a bit different than 4-2-1s

You can only really hear a big difference between a stock cam and a big cam if your on the leaner end of A/F ratio at idle which makes the motor sound a little rough (ie: mid 15:1 and leaner). Once the A/F ratio goes to the rich side (upper 13:1 and richer) the engine runs more smooth and you can't tell too much. The bigger cam has a little more poppity pop pops. Here is vid of my CSX with the F4 cam before and after removing the melted cat. The end of the video is fully open 3" exhaust and A/F ratio is sitting around mid to high 13:1. The big cam sounds alot different at higher engine speeds though.

I ran a high compression 2.5 NA w/ a HF cat, a NON-louvered glasspack, to side exit.

It sounded good, had a little rumble to it, but backfired and *poped* alot on deceleration(i liked it though), mainy when trans braking on a hill.
