I have had good luck with either VHT or Dupli-Color brake caliper paint. That is unless you have access to a powdercoater:D

+1 to Dupli-color high temp engine primer and engine paint.

-Clean the block, (even if it was boiled, peeded, etc.) with brake cleaner
-Mask the block
-prime the block - several light layers
-let primer dry overnight
-paint the block - several light layers

***also make sure that it is warm, like 60°F or better or you will have a long time to wait for the paint to cure properly.

Ive tried many ways, and believe it or not nothing seems to work better than anything else. Over the last few years Ive painted a few blocks (all big blocks) with regular old single stage automotive paint. IE the same stuff you would spray on the outside of your car.

One or two layers, just enough to cover everything, on the bare CLEAN block. no primer, no special high temp stuff, just nice shiny auto single stage. Ive got a block of my own that I painted this way 10 years ago that is still in good shape. There is some paint coming off in some of deep corners and out of the way spots, but then again, Ive never had all the paint stay on for ever, regardless what it is.

I used some stuff called stove bright. It is made for bbq and stoves. Super durable, and has a little bit of a sparkle to it in the light. I like it a lot. Plus it will stick to anything!

I actually had at buy it at a place that sells stoves and fireplaces! Homedepot used to stock it, but they dont anymore. The thing I love about it is that it will stick to any surface (clean, dirty, primed, or not) and it dries super quick.

I think both of you guys are nuts! Every drop of oil and piece of grime is going to show up on those! I am WAY to lazy to keep somthing like that looking clean. They both look way cool though.

Good point, but not all of us detail our car with a microscope and a q-tip. :D

keep in mind that you are supposed to bake most high temp paints...they are basically ghetto powder coats.

I couldn't bake my block :( so I used several bright and very hot halogens up close and sat it outside on a 100+ degree day for several hours. Surface temp was about the same as leaving a wrench in the sun...if you know what I mean:o
Ghetto baking for ghetto powder coat.

I've always used the high heat duplicolor on the bare block, no primer. Then cover it with the high temp clear. Seems to work good so far although I don't have a lot of miles on either of the motors I've done recently.

On a clean freshly machined and tanked motor I've had good luck with just regular Duplicolor engine paint, no primer or clear, but I did put on a few coats.

That's been in the car for 7 years now since I took that picture and has held up pretty well. It's not show quality anymore, but still looks decent. And the car was a daily driver for a good number of those years.

I used the same paint on my minivan engine, just sprayed it over the old paint and did a quick cleaning. In the van the paint didn't last for even a year, so surface prep is key.

I used mopar performance on mine and I dont like how it went on at all,the other 2 blocks I have done was with single stage with the hadener in it so It would last longer and it held up fine. Also have used the duplicolor engine enamel on engines, and calipers.Im gona try there high temp exhaust paint on the header so it doesnt rust in the garage.

I'm going to use the POR-15 kit specifically for engine painting. I will have to post some pics up here when I get things together.
