So I ordered new shift rods (L body + 525), they'll be here next week. I know there going to be tough to get on, hard enough to get the whored out ones back on (no offense to any ladies of the night). Anyone have tips?

Drop the downpipe and disconnect it from the exhaust, opens the area up nicely.

i dont think the downpipe interferes at all w/ the A-525 linkages, swaping them isnt a tuff job at all, just get the car jacked up far enough to reach everything. i am doing the same job w/ new heim-jointed linkages on my a-525.

I dont recall having the downpipe in the way when I had to reassemble the linkage (on the side of the road), but if it will make it easier you can bet its coming out.
If I were dropping the trans, heims are what it would get. Certainly the way to go if you want to keep using rods.

I'll admit that it's been a while since I did shift linkage in an l-body (4years) and even longer since I did a replacment in the car, but If you looking for more room to move around then droping the dp should help, not saying you can't do it without, cause I have, but it may give you some more room.

I found that clearing out the airbox and everything above the transmission gives you a little bit of room to work from above...of course I was doing it on a carbed car, so I didn't have to work around a turbo. God bless a heim joint shifter. Best modification I've ever made to a car.

Here are pics of shift rods on A525. Buy female and one male heim joints on Ebay - about $20, measure centers of plastic joints, grind plastic off ends, cut rods down so centers of new heim joints will be same as original centers, thread rods. Done One pic has view of mopar girdle.

Heims will go in this spring or summer when I disassemble the car for paint. I was tired of zip ties coming off or breaking, factory rods are so cheap I figured I'd use those for now. Thanks for the input.

Ive got the end clips from a dodge dealer in the town I live in. I would think all the dealers should have them. There the clips that go on the ends of the rods.:bump2:

JOSH installing the stock linkages is a breeze, no need to remove anything just jack the car up.......and yes the factory clips and zip ties are no substitute for the heim joints, i got mine done by Stefan Mullikin in Washington state, he did a great job, $50 you supply the parts his email is: csx106@yahoo.com

Thanks for the info. I know Stefan. I used to be SDAC PNW chapter member :)
I just thought that new rods would be hard to snap over the balls. Not much room on the tranny side, so I thought leverage would be difficult.

"... How does it feel?...."

cant tell as of yet, just got these linkages and the car is in storage until spring.

JOSH yes you'll have to use some force but those new ball & sockets will snap together with a little muscle.

I was able to pop the new ones on my GLH with a small pair of channel lock pliers. BTW, the part # for the shifter clips is 4340118, three are needed, I think they ran around $3 apiece last I bought some.

Should I grease the sockets with any special grease, or just a dab of axle grease? Or nothing? They did'nt come with anything special.

I've been told to install them dry.

Grease or no grease, it's a double edged sword. With grease it works slick, but attracts dust and gravel which chew up the plastic. Without grease they wear a bit due toi lack of lube. 6 of one half dozen of the other....

Good point 86Shelby. I installed them dry, attracting grit seems worse. Wow, so thats what my tranny feels like!
