I have a 29c256 chip I want to burn for a SMEC. Do I need to use the 32 bit check type or 16?

Hmm you know now I'm not sure because I see you said 29C256, I've use a 27C256 with the 16 bit and it worked fine. I guess just try it and see, I don't think it would ruin the chip.
What is the application for the 29 chip?

The 29C256 is pin for pin compatible EEPROM that replaces the EPROM 27C256. It's what I use, and I really like them. However they are somewhat expensive, but most Atmel chips are. If your burning a SMEC cal it will be a 32K file so I would think 32 would be the way to go. I'm not really sure though since I don't really understand what "check type" is refering to.

I use 27SF512 chips for SMEC, and I was told to use the 16 bit by Brian (aries turbo) for both the 27C256 and the 27sf512 chips. The offset hex is different between the chips, but the check type is the same.

Ok that would make sense. The offset will need to be different depending on the size of the chip, but the checksum will always remain the same since the file size does not change.

when i open up my burner software, "16 bit add" was what was set for check type.... i just left it alone and it worked fine.

dont confuse the "16" in the check with a file size of 16kB... they are not the same. the 16 bit add is just for error checking.

the SMEC has a 32kB rom size. the 2XC256 is a 32kB rom. the offset will be 0000.
