Im looking at buying a 89 SHO, and the heater core has been bypassed in it. Has anyone ever put a heater core in one of these cars? If its a PITA, Im going to pass it up. lol.

is it ever not a pain in the --- to change a heater core on a car made past 1980?

^^^^ yeah that.

Only time you "get lucky" is when you can get the passenger side console apart without having to pull the whole dash and remove the steering wheel. (Though actually some cars it's easier to drop the column off the clamp bolts to get the clearance.)

If it's a keeper, go get a manual of some type, that tells where all the fittings are, otherwise you're bound to bust a clip somewhere and have the dash rattle for ever more.

P.S. Ford FSMs on CD can be found on the internet in the usual places for such things.

Book time is 6 hours, so for a first time, count on 8-10 hours and you need to discharge the a/c, its not for the faint of heart.
