View Full Version : Check your cat!

I finally got the opportunity to get the CSX on a lift yesterday and fight the exhaust to get the cat off. I would normally burn up a cat a year when I used to daily drive it, but this one tops them all. :)
I don't think this cat liked the heat this engine is producing now.

After gutting the cat the A/F ratio went from 10.8:1 to 12.2:1.
So all you guys making major exhaust changes, make sure you watch your fuel when you go big. It effects the fueling a great deal.

This uncorked a good amount of power in the upper end:

What cat?

I assume your reading the AF before the cat?

I found a small ceramic hi/flo cat on Ebay. Going to give it a whirl on the van. I am using there stainless one on my Jimmy and it made a huge difference in power.

The affordable High Flow Catco. They have been good cats, I think I am just hard on them :D

Catco's are really bottom of the dog pyle. I use a Walker Super cat and its taken a beating with no problems.

Yeah, we have emissions testing evey year and with my new setup, I can't run the large cat anymore-it won't fit, hence getting the small bullet ceramic cat.

That cat was just a little melted. I doubt it was hindering the flow,

No cat will last if you dump unburned fuel in it:o I use the bolt it on for the E test, bolt it out the rest of the time method...

Actually, your wrong, ;)

The RX7 uses a ceramic cat from Mazda, there around $1500 and they live against a Rotary, which basically is throwing out unburned fuel, :p

just curious, do you have to have a cat for your car to be street legal, i know you need a muffler, but im not sure about the cat

Depends on where you are. I do inpsections and if I did it by the book, I could fail any car for exhaust mods or missing converters. Of course, I don't but thats the way the rules are. I need one around here for smog testing.

someone here needs to retake chem 101...

All cats live with unburned fuel, they actually need it. Otherwise they can't scrub the NO. But it's a kinda tit for tat thing, if they get too much unburned fuel and no monoxides, they plug up, if they get too much monoxides and no unburned fuel they burn up. On an N/A you might be able to save a struggling cat by running hot and lean for a bit, or piling in the oxidisers.

Why? What does that have to do with a Rotary cat living in the worst enviroment ever?

I know how cats work, thankyou very much.

I never run a CAT, but mine isn't a DD. If I keep it under 5000 miles, no emission testing.

That sure sounds choked off. I like the "crackle" of the no cat. I've always run the factory cat, even if it's been replaced once. It's not worth the fines and stuff if you're caught without one around here.

My daytona was a DD, so I gutted a catco cat and shoved a pipe through it. Passed the vision emissions inspection just fine and never got pulled over.

Simon, what part number is the 3 inch walker cat?

I have a walker stock replacement cat in my Saturn, 4 years later, it still clean like the day it was put on.

Theres 2 that I use. 15147 is the large body super converter, pretty tough units.
15068 is the one I use against Rotary's, they take a beating. Both are good cats but add restriction, hence I am trying the one off Ebay.

This one looks to flow well-

Or if on a budget you can get the knock off-

There's also the Dynatech, which is suppose to be one of the best flowing. But it probably would only pass a ''visual'' emission inspection.

You should hear it at WOT on 28 psi boost!

Are you running a muffler?

Nothing like the sound of straightpipe!

Never had a muffler. Wouldn't fit when I was done with the piping.

Nice find, ;)

I have the last one on my 98 Jimmy, it made a huge difference in power and the exhaust got way louder. It passed my emissions testing too.

I thought I saved the link for the cat I wanted to get but can't find it, :mecry:

Yeah I thought the Magnaflow Metallic looks like it flows pretty well, looking at the honeycomb.
Nice to hear the flowmonster one passes emissions though, but the honeycomb doesn't look to flow as well and also the magnaflow has a lot more area to go through as well.

The pics are deceiving, they is virtually no restriction in the cat, you can see right thru it, ;)

I found another one-

Well there's different style's of honey comb. The flowmonster up there has squares, like the catco does too. The one you just posted is like the magnaflow which is a D shape. The stocker is square with a slash through it, very restrictive indeed.

Ok, gotta go look thru them again, :p

Ok, checked them, I see what you mean. The Magna and the last link I posted are the same, the FM is a more restrictive type. Tough call as the Magna has a wicked warranty, ;)

Thought I would update this, installed this cat the other day, and it has NO restriction. I started it up with an open dp, then installed the cat and the sound never changed, put a regular Walker Supercat on and the sound muffled big time.
The kicker was our smog test, it FLEW thru, almost zero's and even the NOx was low, which our engines are bad for. They were looking for it and had to point it out but they were satisfied, :thumb:
