I have a 03 2wd Ram 2500 HO 6spd Long Bed Quad cab. I have put over 207K on her since I bought her new in Nov of 02. Still has the stock clutch. It has a 4.10 rear,MBRP exhaust,AFE intake,Bully dog downloader(I only run it on the 50hp setting),Innertruck.com vent tube kit,91 Gallon AUX fuel tank.

Nice. I used to have a 94 12 valve 5 speed, no one would really ever guess it was a 94' though. My bro has an 02' 6 speed with tons of mods. Super phat shaft 66 turbo, stage 4 125 hp jammer injectors, edge EZ box with a TST competition box. He's putting out about 475 RWHP and over 1000 ft/lbs. My truck was pulling 325 RWHP and not quite 800 ft/lbs. My truck was bone stock when I got it, and also was a complete base model -not even A/C!!! But I installed A/C, got everything from a donor truck, really wasn't that hard since everything was pre-wired for it. But I did have to change the entire box under the dash, that was a PITA.
Anyway, my mods were-
Grind torque plate flat (free 100 WHP)
370 injectors
4'' exhaust straightpipe
hx35 turbo in place of the worn out WH1C
181 delivery valves
Gauges-Boost, pyro, fuel pressure
I put on my bro's original 02' aluminum alloy wheels, what a difference in the look of the truck compared to the stock steel wheels.
Sold it last year to buy a house instead. Actually in the second pic you can see the very end of my bro's black 02' and part of the 18' eagle alloy's he put on with 35X12.50 rubber-

Nice looking truck. Id love to have a early 12v or 24v.They are a hell of alot cheaper to fix, lol. One reman injector for mine cost me $300.I dont plan on doing many more mods on mine unless something breaks like the turbo,ex mani ect. Then Ill replace it with something better.

Yikes. It only cost me $200 for a slightly used set of 370 injectors (+90 HP), but new they are $300 for all 6!
Oh forgot my bro's truck has a ATS 3 piece exhaust manifold, forgot about that. He hasn't spared any expense, he just rubs it with a diaper. He just recently put the most top of the line Bilstein shocks on all four corners, that only set him back $1100

I've always liked the look of the 1st gen's but they just have too many issues such as electrical and general quality issues.

1100 doesnt sound too bad, what do a good set of coilovers for a neon or srt go for these days, more than that im sure. When I had a leaky injector I took it to a dealer. They where too stupid to figure out which one was bad. They called Chrysler and Chrysler said to replace all 6. Well that would have been fine and dandy except it was about 1100 miles out of warranty. So it would have cost me $3600 just for the injectors.I checked every available option, even considered buying a low milage common rail for about 5k and it had everything, injectors, turbo, inj pump ect on it.Not a bad deal considering what the new injectors cost alone without labor.Didnt have the 5k unfortunately.Called another dealer and they found remans for $300.I borrowed a infrared temp gauage and found the leaky one, took about a hour to change and its been fine since.Last time I will ever take a vehicle to a dealer.

$1100 just for shocks? I usually pay less than $25 a piece to replace mine LOL.
Forgot to mention my truck had 256K miles when I sold it.

Yeah same here.I might splurge though and pay $60 a piece for Gabriels from Autostoned with a lifetime warranty for my truck. 256k isnt bad.

Here is a pic of a buddys truck. He owns a yard and built this out of 2 different trucks. You couldnt get a crew cab with the 8 ft box...so he made his own.

Try to find a 98 12 valve, you'll be happy you did. Not saying that 24v's are bad, just saying that if you've liked the 1st gen 12v for that long you aren't going to like the 24 as much because of the electrical aspect of the engine. 12v is still all mechanical.

GLHS592
01-24-2008, 07:50 PM
Yeah, I'm a 12 valve fan. They get better fuel mileage too. Didn't they switch to 24 valve mid year in 1998?

moparzrule
01-24-2008, 07:56 PM
The engine was optional that year, you could get either one. A 12 valve quad cab is rare, but they are out there.
The 98-02's still get good mileage, just when they went common rail they took a big hit. My bro added a Edge EZ box and RV (+40 HP) injectors and he gain 2 MPG on his 02' quad cab. His best mileage was 21-22 I think.

I have a 1992, bought it with 143,300 miles on it. Have about 176,000 miles now. Get about 16mpg when hauling (speed or weight) but about 23 if I keep my foot out of it and stay about 55 to 60 mph.

Unfortunately the trip meter is all that acurate. Its a good guide but hand calculating is the way to go. The mileage will get better once you get some more miles on it. My 03 with 208k is getting 24-25 Hand calculated and 26-27 on the over head.I drive like a prude though.

I found a guy who makes LEDs to replace the bulbs. I love the blue over the stock green color. He makes them for the aftermarket gauges as well. so my stock guages are the same color as my aftermarkets. They really make the orange needles stand out as well.
Im thinking about doing the swap in one of my r/ts.

If anyone is interested i will try to find his contact info. :thumb:

he has other colors as well, i cant remember what he has other than red (which looks pink)

My '96 has 167K on it. My bro-in-law bought it new in Denver in '96, and sold it to me in '00 with only 22K on it. It's a 5-speed with 3.54 gears. I get better mileage in Denver with it than I do in OK! Here, it's 17 combined/18 highway/15 hauling a loaded open 18' car hauler. Only got 20 with it one time, with a 40-mph tailwind!

Something is wrong. Check the fuel pressure, number 1 killer of fuel mileage. You should be seeing 22+ MPG highway. The overflow valve is the usual common cause of low fuel pressure, I replaced mine and mileage jumped 2 MPG. I also had to replace my lift pump. Not that hard of a job though, a little harder than a small block chevy because it's harder to get too. Then my mileage jumped yet another 1 MPG and my best all highway mileage at 70 MPH was 24 MPG.

I really wanted to make my gauges have red numbers, since my truck is red. Don't know if I'd like pink, though.

1992 D-350. Just turning 192,000 miles and runs like a champ. Within the last 5,000 miles it has gotten a new injection pump, HP injectors, a four inch exhaust, new tires and a rear main seal a few weeks ago. I have a set of stock bumpers to put on it along the rest of the side moldings. I have my eye on a '98 quad cab, short bed, 12 valve at a local dealer here. He doesn't want to give me ANYTHING on a trade so I would sell this if anyone was interested.

Nice looking 1st gens.

I sold my old 1st gen. and picked this one up in February. It has 132k on the clock. Mods are #100 fuel plate, 4" exhaust, and BHAF air filter. I think the stock turbo is about maxed out.

^Is that a 96 or 97? Must be a 215 pump to have the turbo maxxed out with just the torque plate. Did you put in the governor spring kit yet? Thats a super sweet upgrade for a 5 speed with a torque plate upgrade.

GLHS592

It's a 1997. I haven't had time to research anything. I also hate to admit that I'm not really well versed in diesel performance. The previous owner had a local shop do all the mods. I was told that the 100 plate is probably a little too much.

I'm just guessing the turbo is about maxed out. The EGT's tend to run awful high pulling my loaded enclosed trailer up a 2% grade.

Another thing is this truck has California emissions. In other words, it has an EGR setup. The CEL came on a while back (EGR code), but it doesn't seem to be affecting how the truck runs. I wouldn't think that would have an effect on EGT's. I'm just going to remove the EGR and block it off. A business card words wonders for the CEL.

It's common rail. I didn't want to do the in tank conversion so I got an after market pump and built a bracket to mount it to the top of the skid plate behind the transfer case. I cut and barbed the original stainless line and connected it with rubber fuel line. It's more resposive than it ever was but it also idles about 100 rpm higher now.

Im afraid my intank pump may be getting weak.I need to check the pressure on it to the rail. Its down on power and boost, only 10psi.Turbo seems fine,no shaft play or oil in the exhaust housing (220k on the turbo) Or I have a leak somewhere.
