Ok I got the 1/4"npt tap and the 7/16" drill bit. I can't find anywhere that carries a 1/4" pipe plug with an allen head they all have the square lug on them at every place I've checked. I don't think i can get into one of these to tighten it since it looks like it will be recessed in the tranny a little. Where can I get one of these plugs?

I think we use these at my work. I will check tomorrow and let you know.

Are you doing this with the transmission in the car, or out?

Either way, I wouldn't mind seeing some pics of the job, if you have time.

Did mine while the tranny was apart.

Looks like trying to drill it with the trans installed runs way too much of a risk of chewing up the ring gear.
My question is answered, thanks!:thumb:

I found a bolt that was big enough at my local bolt supply shop. I had it cut down to length, drilled out the middle and embed a rare earth magnetic in it. Works great.

Sounds like great idea.

I was wondering about an oil pan plug from some other make.

Transmission is out for installation of new diff. bearings. It's pretty simple I found my instructions here

I remembered a friend who works in an industrial supply warehouse and he got me an assortment of plugs.

I had thought about a magnetic plug but then I thought that I really didn't want a magnet right under the ring gear after seeing what the magnet looked like after my bearing came apart. There was a magnet stuck to the side of the case right next to the ring gear on my transmission. I didn't want to run the risk of having another bearing failure and have the ring gear pick up large chunks potentially cracking the housing, chewing up the gears etc... i figured the small particles would probably run out when the oil was changed, what didn't stick to the other magnet of course.

Not that it matters but I wonder why my 1/4" NPT tap called for a 25/64's bit:confused:

Maybe it has a wierd thread pitch. I double checked on a tap drill chart at work and it said 7/16.

That is the bit size I was sold with my 1/4th NPT tap.
