Yeah. I posted picts of the car when I bought it, and was told it was 1 of 22 made in 86 red w/ gold interior, and 1 of 3 red w/gold interior and no A/C(mine was a factory A/C delete car).

Why did you sell this beast????? You should have kept it.

I know, that car was awesome. I drove it for about a year or so, then converted it to TII, with a ported head, 1-piece intake, and GLHS rad/IC combo. Once the TII conversion was done, I drove it for a few more months, then sold it. It was pretty damn quick, and was also 100% rust free. It was originally from Colorado, and was there it's entire until I bought it and brought it back to MN. Shortly after I sold it, it was parked in the street infront of the new owners house and was hit hard by a drunk driver new years night and was totalled.

I sold it because I bought that black SRT4 that I had for a while. I don't think you ever saw that one Steve. I had the blue and black SRT4's at the same time. And with my moms Red one, it looked cool at the house, SRT4's everywhere... LOL.

you had a red over tan (the interior color isnt gold it's tan per the factory descriptions) 86 glht???? and you sold it???? what a cryin' shame. that car looks sweet, i usually do not like any L-body in graphic red but that tan interior just makes that car........ and looks great w/ the red.

so where did the car go to?

I sold it to a guy in South Bend, Indiana. Thats where the car was totalled on New Years night a few years back. After it got hit, he bought a rolling shell GLHT and swapped everything over into the new shell, and I think the carcus of the car got scrapped.

The gold GLH's had the same "tan" interior. I'd love to see a gold GLH painted yellow. With that tan interior, it would look great.

great, so at least the tan interior lives on.

the tan interior was available on all omnis but i do not think i have ever seen the tan in any omni except a GLH or GLHT. anyone got a pix of a regular omni w/ the tan?

I remember reading that story, Saw Wave Analog I think is his screen name. That was a nice color combo, as is the black and tan. Mmm black and tan.

dealers did it all the time in the 80s/early 90s
my ES had them but it was just double back tape holding it on
here is Turbokids new car and these ones are riveted on it :(

Is that the optional door rub protection package/option? IIR Turbodave's might have originally had that?

Well mine isin't nearly as nice as some of the other ones in this post. However, finding a rust free GLH Turbo in my area of the country is next to impossible. I bought this one from Washington state and imported it into Canada. It's a Santa Fe blue (was repainted due to peeling) with a blue interior. The body is decent for it's age, no rust just a couple of dents. The interior is about the same, the seats are rough, armrest is cracked, saggy headliner but other than that it's all there and in good shape. All the black side trim is there with the car, as well as the correct bumpers, most of a DC over the top intercooler kit, MP computer, some DC gauges and other random parts. At some point someone put in the deluxe half carpeted door panels from a horizon and it has a really 80's Hurst T-handle shift knob on it.
Plans are to get it running and stopping on its own power, then do a retro 80's look on it; DC over the top intercooler, smoked headlight covers, polished pizza's or swiss cheese wheels, GLHS wheel and speedo overlay, possibly rear louvers as well.
The car is at my storage lot, I'll get updated pics that show a clean car next time I'm out that way.

Onto the pics:

Here are a couple pics of my other that I've owned over the years.

1986 Red/Grey GLH Turbo. I owned it for ten days before being rear ended while waiting to turn left. Car was a complete write off, I bought it back and stripped it of all the good parts.

My old 1985 Gold/tan GLH turbo. I had this car for about a year, I bought this one of of Washington state as well with a cracked K-Frame. I bought a 85 GLH N/A in Gold/Tan for parts and used the K-frame from that as well as any other good parts. There was literally stack of reciepts for this car totalling about $13,000 over the span of it's life. The body was great, so was the paint and the interior was super nice as well. The front seats looked brand new because the original owner had put seat covers on early in the cars life. The 525 blew up on it, a 520 with cable shift was installed and then I sold it in a weak moment. I would love the car back, last i heard its under construction.

My very first turbo Dodge was an 85 Sante Fe blue GLHT I bought in New Holland Indiana way back in 1997. Since the original paint was almost non-existent, it was eventually repainted white and a 2.2 hoodscoop was grafted on. Another change I made was seats from a carbed Shelby Charger.

It was an incredibly well running car that initiated my crazy turbo Mopar obsession. This little trooper literally shaped my life...I wouldn't have the Family and friends that I'm blessed with now had I not bought it that cold winter evening 13 years ago...

It traded hands numerous times after a local SDAC member purchased it...ironically on two separate occasions I found it on eBay! It was eventually parted by a guy in Iowa (if I remember correctly) as it was incredibly rusty. No floor whatsoever, so the last owner auctioned the TI drivetrain...I recognized it by a single engine bay picture :)

Here's a few pics the final owner sent me.

Exactly...if you look closely you will notice that a large portion of the visible "floor", is actually the backside of the rust stained carpeting

My red GLH turbo had the protection package on it, the previous owner removed the side moldings though. I saved the bumperettes from the car because I though they were sorta neat.

BOOSTBOY great pictures, you are just two colors shy of the complete GLH color palette.

Hopefully someday I'll complete the list. Blue and gold are my two favorite colours, I wish I could find another clean gold one. I would sell my CSX for it! I usually avoid the black/silver/red cars due to the red interior, I can't stand it! However, a friend might be selling his Silver/grey GLH turbo in the summer so maybe I'll pick that up too.

"......Were the nuts for the struts gold on all the 86' S cars? .............."

the factory plated the strut nuts w/ gold cadmium, which very quickly oxidizes and turns brown. if you pull off the dust boots at the rear shock upper mounts and look at the main nut it usually looks a lot newer and golden-ish color, as the other nuts should look. it is not unique to the glhs.

They're for my 85 GLH, I have the original build sheet, window sticker, temp tag it went home with, warranty work, owner's manual, warranty booklet, and original 85 dealer booklet ads. Cool stuff to get cars from thier original owners :)
And, brand spanking new, an N/A Omni GLH went for $8571...jeesh.

Took some pics of it on the ground...just figured I'd update :p
Also, fixed a HUGE vac leak...and decided to take it for a spin and gun it in first...I thought the clutch was slipping, look behind me and there was a black line following me :D
Torque steer wasn't real evident...but, then again, I've been driving a truck with 4" of play in the steering, so, maybe I just didn't notice the pull.

I have everything for the outside...even the fog covers...but, just beginning to prep it for paint...so, don't mind the missing everything...lol

But...a work in progress. It running like a raped ape on 20 y/o everything but gas and the cooling system is not too shabby.

its a ford hood scoop. Fits the hood perfectly, all it needs is a little trimming to fit the curve of the hood...but, goes with the car well...

When I found it in the junkyard...it was on an 81 Mercury Capri. I guess thats what they came on as google images came up with a few.

This one just happened to be a faded blue, though, so, it fits my cars current condition perfectly...lol

They'll all see :p Also...I'm sure your interior is actually together. Without a carpet or headliner...these cars are tin cans...yikes. But, will be getting a new one of each.

Well...I actually didn't get them. I was wanting a set of the older Omni lights (like the ones you sent me, late 70s)...but, to be honest, thats a little low on the list right now. Also, the originals are near perfect, so, not too worried about it, yet anyway.
But, anyone have any tricks to getting them out? I can't beleive Dodge seriously glued them in...lol

yikes...that sounds dangerous. I think I'll start with a hair dryer...lol May work. Seams to be like the windshield sealer stuff...the kind that never really dries.

but...there's a leak there, so, I need to pull them off anyway for paint, then, seal'm up during reassembly.

I also have a set of 17s I'm going to throw on it. I'll keep the originals for something different every now and then, but...the 17s should look pretty good.

me gusta mucho. I like those wheels, and the bumper tuck.

Not sure about the rear...still in the air about it...but, it will have dual exhaust tips...one exiting through another cutout in the rear valance just like the stock one...lol

But...the front I do like.

And, what size tires are you running?

The only thing about the rear is though...with a bumper, it looks finished but not very attractive. And, without a bumper it looks better, but, like its missing something...lol

So...need to fabricate a more attractive rear bumper...like mold one off of a charger on it or some :p jk...but, you get my point.

I sold it to a guy in South Bend, Indiana. Thats where the car was totalled on New Years night a few years back. After it got hit, he bought a rolling shell GLHT and swapped everything over into the new shell, and I think the carcus of the car got scrapped.

Yep. That sucked. I stripped *everything* out of that car down to the windows and good door handles though, and it was reborn into a much less structurally sound black car that I gave the tan interior... the black one hauled --- because I didn't care about gutting it like I did with that super clean red one.

Thanks! The tires are 205/50/15's on both cars. The red one has 15x7 wheels, the blue one has the stock pizzas for now(which are 6" wide). When you see them side by side, it makes a big difference, that extra 1" width in the wheel really widens the tires out nicely. I've got a set of 7" wide wheels with new tires waiting to go on my blue one...

Here are some pics from last year of my 1986 GLHT. Purchased it 2 years ago, mostly stock with a larger exhaust (size ??). 105,000 kms. Floor pan rust cut out and new sheet metal welded-in, new paint last year, powder coated valve cover and bumpers, new windshield, mint interior with new headliner, dealer installed sunroof, new suspension.

I now have pizza wheels installed with some near new Hancook 195/50/15 ready to be installed. Right now I'm dealing with a broken EGR tube, rotten muffler and some frame rail rust. Repairs scheduled to be done by the end of April - then I hope to be able to have 5 months of summer fun.

I find it hard to find L-body owners out there who are content with their T1's - everyone seems to want to go T2. If there are others out there like me who are looking for a sub-group of guys trying to keep their T1's near stock, please send me a pm so we can keep in touch. Especially when it comes to locating T1 mechanical parts - everyone seems to chuck them out when converting over to T2. Pretty soon they will be near impossible to locate or acquire for a reasonable price.

The lady I got my GLH from's husband has an Omni GLH.

He bought it brand new off the lot at the same time the lady bought my GLH, has all the turbo stuff on it, hood, decals, and its even on the build sheet...
but its n/a, carburated.

Its also a non a/c car which was accidentally shipped to Florida (was meant to go up north).

Anyone ever heard of them doing anything like that. Marking something as something it is not from the factory...lol Or maybe it was a halfway done when someone changed their mind...lol

Lets face it, the quality control, or should I call it "consistancy of production" when these cars were being built was minimal. I guess quality control is a bad term, I'm not trying to say these cars are all POS's, just saying I think a lot of stuff like this may have been possible. This still happens with Chrysler today. In the late 90's when Chrysler was building the 1st gen neons, all the ACR sedans were SOHC, and came with a flat(non-buldge) hood. My old 99 ACR Sedan had a buldge hood, and it was factory(all newer cars have those little stickers with the VIN on every body panel). When we were discussing this on the Neon forums, someone that worked at the plant said they ran out of flat hoods for a couple days during production, so they used buldge hoods. The buldge is completely cosmetic, so there really are no ill effects of switching them. It would cost Chrysler a TON of money to shut down the assembly lines and wait for parts to show up, so it's cheaper to just keep building cars with whatever parts you've got. Same thing with the SRT4's. Yellow was supposed to be an 03 color only. Well, 03 was over and they still had a drum of yellow paint. It's more cost effective to just use it, then throw it away, so there were 127 Yellow 04 SRT's built.

Like cordes said, there are a few GLHT's on here with normal GLH ground effects. Probably the same thing. They ran out of GLHT decals, and had a pile of GLH ones, well, throw em on there and keep goin...

It would be interesting to see the VIN of this GLHT with a N/A motor. The VIN would tell if it's a N/A car with turbo hood/decals, or if it's a turbo car with the wrong engine. I would guess it's a N/A car with the wrong stuff on it. One assembly line guy accidentally put a turbo hood on it, then 2 stations later down the production line, another guy looked at the hood and said "It's got the vent, it's a turbo car, so it gets turbo stickers..." I don't know, sounds interesting though...

Both cars have the same wheels on them, they're Kosei K1's, 15x7. The red car has Hoosier A6 autox slicks on all 4, 205/50/15. The cage is a custom piece, it was in the car when we bought it. It could be better, but it works well, the chassis has zero flex.

I've got 3 85 GLH turbos currently, and an 86 GLHS. Looking at picking up two more GLH turbos in the near future.

This is my nicest one, recently repainted and equipped with a lot of old-school direct connection parts.

You may need more posts to attach stuff, or you may have to pony up the $10 to host pictures on here. It is well worth it IMO. The other option would be to get a photobucket type account and link to the pics.

Also, what suspension is in the Red car? Coilies?

Yup, Koni coilovers. 400lb springs in front, 300lb springs in rear. Big sway bars, polybushings.com bushings.

Like JT said, it's the 4door DC one right from the catalog back in the late 80's. Still has the DC tag in the fiberglass on the bottom.

I think the black GLH on ebay recently has the same scoop

I can take a picture, but the southern sun has toasted the paint, melted the top plastic part of the door panels, dash cracked...And it is slowly melting into the dirt. I always have thoughts on getting it running again, but other projects keep getting in the way.

There used to be a couple of nice write-ups, but I haven't seen the links to them recently. Harry, you've done quite a few things to your glh i had in mind for mine ie: digital dash, sc seats, and the spearco out front... I like your taste! Please do link to the thread for the digital dash if it still exists(or perhaps a write-up please!) since i found a nice digital dash and pigtails near me!

Wow, I don't think I have ever seen a digital dash in an L-body. Is there a write-up somewhere on how to do this?

Only since 1999. There are two how-to on this website alone.

http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/content.php?243-L-Body-Digital-Dash-Install
http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/showthread.php?30-How-to-put-a-Digital-Dash-in-a-GLH-S&highlight=Directions+on+Putting+a+Digital+Dash+in+ a+GLH-S

Here are the pictures.
http://web.archive.org/web/20000611093541/http://pw1.netcom.com/~jbarnett/digdash.html

I did not use the original GLH dash like he did. I did the wiring first, then cut whatever I need to fit the backcover of the digital dash in there, drill a hole and j/b weld the rest to secure it. Cut the actual digital dash to whatever I need, then put it. I finish with a grey plexiglass tinted with a 35% tint. The digital dash is deeper than the space allow, I didn't see a way to put the factory dash trim back on.

Hey nice radiator. Hard to make it work? What year civic? It was quite easy. Just look on ebay for honda b16 radiator. I think I used an existing hole for the one dowel on the bottom and drilled a hole for the other side. The original rad had the hose going to the heater core, civic rad does not. I had another water pump housing with the fitting on it so I put the heater hose there. I then made the upper bracket you can see. I used this flexible lower hose with 1.25 inlet 1.5 outlet. The upper hose is a cut up stock hose. It's installed at an angle so the cap won't hit the hood. I'm going to build a shroud around it eventually and make nicer brackets. I previously had this rad in my daytona and it was even easier to install. Worked great too.

128 K's, but can't be 100% sure of that - also, the engine was re-built several years ago.
But it came with ALOT of documentation, especially from the 2nd owner - he baby'ed this thing. Lots of receipts for maintenance items, etc.
Also came with several repair manuals.

I think I really lucked out on this one. Even the little things that I pointed out it needed, have all been easy fixes.

From my understaning, yes, the '84's didn't come with ground effects - Direct Connection made the skirts and such for the '85 and '86 models.

MARKNUCK your gold over tan 85 GLH is really nice, and as others have pointed out, exceptionally rare, even back in the day this combo was very unusual. I like how it has remained as a 2.2L HO and not converted to T1 or T2. I do hope you can keep it stock and resist the urge to modify it, we need as many original reference GLH's as we can get since stock original GLH's seem to be getting harder to find.

What are your plans for the car? Thanks for sharing the pix, post up more if you got them.

marknuck311
07-09-2011, 11:23 AM
Hey Marcus,
thanks for the compliments - yeah, definitely stock is how it's going to stay - I've never been into modded cars myself - not to say they can't be nice, but nothing beats a rare, stock vehicle.

At this point, I'm just fixing up the little things (cigarettle lighter wasn't working (done), etc) - and the body has a couple of bubble spots in the paint (rust) so going to clean this up - and it`s running a little rich now, so just going to tweak the carb (has a 5220 Holley) - oh, and the prior owner tore out a bunch of vacuum lines, so I have to figure out what goes where.

Marcus86GLHS
07-09-2011, 04:02 PM
is that the original paint? looks very good for 26 years. glad you are keeping it as a 2.2 HO. i've always wanted to see what a 2.2 HO GLH could do performance-wise with some stealthy mods like a better cam, better exhaust, porting, etc.....can you achieve say 175 hp to the tires w/o any major changes to the appearance of the engine bay?

thedon809
07-09-2011, 07:14 PM
You will need a higher flowing carb/intake manifold setup for sure.

marknuck311
07-09-2011, 08:05 PM
Adding (if you could ever find one) a Direct Connection Supercharger would add some serious horses - even then, you might have to make room/adjust the hood to accomodate it (and I've actually found one - never installed, ALL the parts included - $1000 - too rich for me.....)

Sorry Marcus - no, it's not the original paint, but it is the original paint color: Gold Dust.

Holley 350 2bbl (had to make an adapter plate), Hooker long tube header, and a milled 782 head with a 2.5 roller cam make a nice package. I have no idea what the effects of what I've done are...but...mine runs pretty damn good...lol
