View Full Version : GLHS restoration?

Yes, I have ADD. I'm not even done wth the Charger yet, and I'm already thinking a lot about getting started in my GLHS for the rest of the winter. Now, I'm not saying I would ever try to pass it off as being all original, and anyone can feel free to slap me if I ever do. BUT . . .

I've been wondering how hard it would be to get it as close as possible? Right now, it's got an '88 engine in it, that's the most I know. I don't know if it has the original transmission in it or not, but it's fragged regardless. I do have another 525 from a Charger sitting right next to it. Don't know what year, but probably an '86. Now my question for this part is this- When people say numbers matching, is there actually a serial number cast on the block that matches the VIN? I've seen them stamped on transmissions before, but never paid attention on the blocks. Can something like this be tracked down, or would just finding an '87 casting be the best I could hope for?

Aside from the drivetrain, the car has a Super 60 wiring harness and SMEC, 3" exhaust, and incorrect shocks and struts. Other than that, I'm pretty sure it's all there, right down to the shift knob. I have the exhaust system off my Charger still, less the cat, and could probably find the wiring, computer, and suspension if I was willing to pony up the dough. I'd need the decal set from Positive Impressions of course, and the Mobil 1 decal too now that I think of it.

Or, since it's already modded anyway, would I be better off just taking it all the way? Opinions?

yes, numbers matching on these cars means the numbers stamped into the block and trany match the last 6 numbers in the car's VIN.

the block on a 2.2L is stamped on the driver's side of the block, just below the head gasket line, you will have to remove the airbox to examine these numbers.

the last 6 digits of the VIN are also stamped on the driver's side of the radiator support.

i think you really have to do what your personal preferences guide you towards, who cares what we think right? that being said, i have always been fascinated by cars that appear to be basically all original, and essentially stock, yet way out-perform anything they were "suppose to be capable of".....like a stock-looking 1987 GLHS that runs low 12's. that would be such a cool car.

good luck your project sounds fun.

You are welcome to come up to Omaha and look at mine if you want to check out anything. It's pretty much all original. I bought it new in Dec '86 and it has about 52,000 miles on it. Original paint, decals, exhaust, struts, etc if you need any pics or numbers. Steve.

See that's always been my original plan for the car, but with the Charger now being the modded toy, and GLHS values slowly but surely climbing, I wouldn't mind having it restored properly. But then again, *if* I were to put all that work into it, I doubt I'd be able to bring myself to sell it anyway, and I doubt 95% of the population would know a Super 60 harness from the original anyway (board members excluded).

Steve, I appreciate the offer, and I'll definately take you up on it if/when I get that far. But believe me, this will be a long hard road to restore this car. It is rust free aside from the passenger door, but every single panel on the car is pretty beat up. The car was hit twice in the year that I drove it (I have the worst luck), which is why I never bothered to fix the transmission when it blew- I didn't want to put it back on the road and risk more damage. I already have replacements for the passenger door and both front fenders straightened and in primer hanging in the garage. I think my first step is going to be putting the transmission in and see if I can get it running (been sitting a few years now) and then take it to a body shop and have them put it on a frame machine. The car had a tendency to spit out axles, and I'd be amazed if the car isn't at least slightly tweaked.

Another thing I've realized I'll need to find is a good front airdam, possibly even the whole nose. After working on the Charger, I've learned that the airdam is supposed to go all the way back to the radiator support, just like the Turbo Z Daytonas, but the GLHS's seems to have had the underside cut off.

Looking forward to more input!

Ive got the airdam, it will need repaired. Got the nosecone also. Probably have most everything you need! And if that tranny is the one yougot from me, it is the origional one out of my red 87.

Yeah but you have less miles on yours and it wouldn't take much to make it real nice. Good to hear from you. Plus you guys have tons of cars to pick from.(literally). How is the Bird coming?

EXACTLY what I'm going for with my 'S. I'm mid 13's now.....

Wish we could have met while you where here Steve (glhs231), mother nature had other plans though. Maybe another time.
And I'm still holding on to cash should you suddenly need to sell your's ;)

You'll get first shot at it if I ever decide to sell.(unless Mustang Sally would like to check it out.) I'm not planning on getting rid of it though. My 15 year old daughter really wants it. Her middle name is Shelby. If we ever get back out there we will schedule it around the fires. Merry Christmas to anyone who is reading this. Steve

Another thing I just thought of, weren't these cars supposed to have a shift pattern placard on the console? Mine just has a toggle switch there. Never did figure out what it's there for.

I might go take some pics of the car this weekend if I get bored, just so I can show you guys what I'm starting with. One thing's for sure, we'll find out whether or not I can actually do body work as well as I claim . . .

Car hasn't been washed in about four years.

Still looks good with those 16" pumpers on it though.

True, but it's not flat like the one that was there before.
I took a look at the other pics I have, but they didn't run out well. Some daytime pics would be much better than what I have.

Yeah, we just put the pumpers on so we could push it around.

Here's a few photos, unfortunately the dirt really masks the dents, at least with the lighting in my garage.

Couple old ones from when it got hit the first time- a kid in a Stratus dropped his cigarette and swiped the car while reaching for it.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/377f.jpg

As you can see, the fender lip is pushed in a bit, and the car is just gouged and rippled the whole length of the body. The wheel got blackmarked pretty good, but no actual scratches or damage. I think the black will come off with the clear coat when the wheels get restored. The RR wheel has a flat spot on the back lip, but I have a replacement in the hatch for it.

RR quarter, also dented in:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture001.jpg

Bondo flaked off of LF fender, but I have replacements for the fenders already:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture002.jpg

Cracked/chipped/peeling paint on the nose. This whole car was rattle canned black by a previous owner, which made it look okay from 20 feet, but really looks like crap up close. There's actually a rather long strand of hair in the hood.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture003.jpg

Crows feet in the hood and roof. I'm kinda scared that I'm gonna find rust on the roof once I take the paint off. The hood also has a few dents in it, but if I can fix the door and quarters, the hood will be a breeze.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture004.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture006.jpg

Gouges in the plastic on the rear bumper cover. This actually counted against us badly when dealing with insurance for the side-swipe. They only paid $1600 without totalling it (car was actually owned by my brother at the time).

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture007.jpg

Busted windshield and one of those stupid aftermarket antennaes:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture008.jpg

Dings in the window trim on the door, both sides are similar. Window fuzzies are shot too, not sure what I'll do about that. I need a set for my Charger as well.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture011.jpg

Engine bay. Filthy, yes, but overall everything's in good shape. Overboost tendency aside, the car ran amazingly well. Plenty of power all the way around, always fired right up by just bumping the starter, and idled smoother than any other 2.2 I've ever seen.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture016.jpg

Interior is actually in really good shape aside from the steering wheel and the headliner. Seats looked great, but the embroidery was starting to fray a bit.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture005.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture014.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture015.jpg

And these are the fenders and passenger door I have for the car. The door came with the car, and for some reason was packed with bondo to the point where the crease was smoothed into the door. I must have ground 2-3 pounds of filler off that door, only to find out that it was 95% straight underneath. Just had a few very minor dings.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/GLHS/Picture009.jpg

So that gives you guys a rough idea of what I'm up against, and simultaneously kills any chance of me ever selling it for a decent price.:p

Yeah, that's why I wanted to possibly borrow your stud gun. Even if I could find straight clean quarters, I don't have the means of putting them on. There's only one dent in the hatch, which will be an easy one, the hood will be some light bumping and more filing than anything (no, not filling, filing), and the roof I'm just concerned about the condition of the metal under the paint. Haven't decided on the door yet, whether I want to try to straighten it or just replace it. But like I said, first order of business will be to get it driveable and take it to a frame shop to make sure nothing's really messed up.

As for the Charger, I've been on it since 8pm last night. I've got a full pot of coffee in me and am just getting my fourth wind. Right now my biggest hang up is that shifter linkage, I just can't get it to work for some reason.
