My '72 Charger needs a new carb, the one on it is junk I'm pretty sure, it's a mess. I was looking at a 2-barrel street avenger until I saw the price... anything else out there for a little cheaper that's better than a stocker? Also, what CFM's should I be looking for, around 500-600?

2 bbl? not sure, I've usually throw them away, put a nice 4bbl intake on, and used either an Edelbrock carb or a Qjet,

(cid x rpm) / 3456 = cfm

rpm would be redline rpm. Multiply the answer by volumetric efficiency (figure 80-85% for a moslty stock engine).

Now for carb choices, the Edelbrock carbs are nice, out of the box carbs if you NEVER expect to race the car. For racing applications, they are almost worthless. But, good street carb, comes with good tuning information, easy to work on.

Edelbrock performer 600 is extremely nice and runs better than any holley of comparitive price. I suggest also weiand stealth intake manifold.

Yup, Edelbrock Performer 600 cfm 4bbl carb or so. It'd work really well with a Performer RPM intake, nice dual plane design that'll allow you room to improve the combo in other areas w/o being a bottleneck on performance.

Another intake that's supposed to work *GREAT* on 318s in an Edelbrock LD4B, but you'd have to find that one used.

ETA: Tony D'Agostino has an LD4B for $115 under Aluminum Intakes: http://www.tonysparts.com/moparparts.asp

Don't bother with the regular Performer intake, doesn't flow any better that stock.

Plus the performer intake manifold is a spreadbore pattern which is fine if you want to run a quadrajet. The performer carb is a squarebore.
As for the performer RPM, I believe the weiand stealth is a slight better choice. The ''power zone'' range for the RPM is 1500-6500 while the stealth is idle-6800. Bit better of a design for all around power.

I ran a Carter 750 on an Edelbrock Performer manifold for my 318 in a 75 Plymouth Fury Sport for my high school and college years....car (4,300 lbs) with 2.70 gears ran a low 17 second quarter and beat up on the local mid-70's Chargers and Cordobas with 400-4's. Of course, it only got about 12 mpg on the highway too though. I run a .030 over 360 now with the same manifold but an 800 cfm Thermoquad with 440 jets, and it gets 19 mpg on the highway now and runs 15.7's with the same 2.70 gears.

I'd recommend an Edelbrock 600 and the Performer manifold for you, you'll gain more performance and not really suffer mileage wise if it's tuned right.
