I have a student who is looking at one with a broken timing belt. Do they usually just need a new belt or are the valves toast now too.

If its the 4 banger, I am almost certain its an interference engine. Probably needs at least valves.....if not pistons. Is it dirt cheap?

It is the gt so I think it has the v6 mazda engine.

If its the V6, I think its NON interference. Doesnt say on Alldata?

I found this at probe parts:

Is it an "Interference engine"?

No. What is an interference engine? An interference design is such that the timing is just right to allow the valves to open into the cylinder where they share space with the piston. The valves must be closed in order for the piston to peak; the piston must be below peak in order for the valves to open. Interference engines may offer higher compression for this ability to bring the piston right to the top of the head. Conversely, if the timing belt ever goes on an interference engine while running, the valves will all be shot from being mangled by the pistons still in motion. Non-interference engines are less costly to repair in this event.

Is that in regard to the V6? Because im pretty sure the 4 is interference.

I think the GT only comes with the V6

GT was V6 only, but the 4 was available in base Probe. I have no idea if they are interference or not however. I liked the way those cars looked when they first came out, but I've worked on a few and they all had goofy intermittent electrical issues. They've made it onto my "cars I will stay away from" list as a result.

There not bad, the older 2.2 turbo's freakin rocked. I am glad though that Ford backed off making it the Mustang replacement.

The 2.0 and 2.2L are valve benders, the 2.5 V6 appears to be a freewheeler.

That year GT is V6 only. We had one... Never did a t-belt, I'd say it is interference, but that's only a guess. Sorry...

Gates says it's an interference engine.. In fact, it says all Probe engines are interference.

ya i was going to say its a interference engine, my friend has a 95 mazda mx6 with the japanese v6 in it, very similar engine (10.5 to 1 cr though) and that is interference, the timing belt must have stretched on him and it bent the valves, thats what he gets for rodding on it when cold and it was a tired engine anywas. :( then he spent $1200 dollars at mazda to get it fixed:confused: a new jap motor is like $600 about $800 to your door

Interesting, my Timing belt books says Ni, :eyebrows:

I guess there's some confusion, then. Heck, even Mazda doesn't really know for sure, it seems. From http://www.klio.net/creasy/probe/pfaq.html:

Mazda Manual

Volume 1 section A, "Scheduled Maintenance" outlines these details:

Non-California engines: Replace at 60,000 miles (96,000 KM)

California engines: Inspect at 96,000 (60,000 miles) and again at 144,000 KM (90,000), Replace every 168,000 KM (105,000 miles)

But what is of interest is the footnote that appears under the maintenance table for Canada with regards to the timing belt on Canadian engines: "Replacement of the timing belt is required every 96,000 KM (60,000 miles). Failure to replace this belt may result in damage to the engine."

And further from partstrain.com: 1994: 6Cyl 2.5L GAS, FI, VIN "B", Interference Engine GT

Well, I would assume that it IS interference, and if its not, you get lucky. I did a little searching on it and found more references indicating its a freewheeler.

Is it also asking for a shrubbery?

I think it actually has a herring supplement manual that accompanies it.
