View Full Version : What do I re-wrap this wire harness with?

The factory adhesive cloth has become brittle and white on the wiring harness in the engine bay. What do I wrap this with that will protect it as well as the factory wrapping has? I don't want to use electrical tape for obvious reasons, but there has to something I can ask for at the parts counter..........

ANY help would be appreciated!

I went to DICKS sporting goods and got the black cloth tape that they use to wrap hockey sticks with. I believe it is called friction tape.

Yup, friction tape is the stuff. Some hardware stores carry it, though I go to Menards, 60 ft rolls for $2/ea. If you get the real nice 3M stuff expect to pay around $3 for a 30 ft roll.

I think the friction tape has the most equivalent to factory look, problem is, that black color won't last long:mad: Two years tops... \Then it's grey friction tape:o

That's okay. I have owned ten million vehicles and none of them made it a year without being sold or built to a better standard. I love this van, so I can just do this every time I take out the engine to freshen/whatever. It is just that this stuff is SO horrible looking that I have to do something about it.
Thanks for the tips!

Dude, look up self-amalgamating tape on the internet. That stuff is the s##t. Let us know what you think after reading about it.

Ace hardware has this kind of tape in stock. Just have to make sure it is specified for solvent/ gasoline/ heat resistance. WWW.rescuetape.com describes this stuff. We used to use it on aircraft all the time. Hope this helps.

What is back about electrical tape?

Electrical tape can't take the heat, It gets "gooey" and slimey and makes a mess.

Go to Home Depot and in the elec section they have 3M Electrical cloth friction tape for around 2.50 a roll. Looks as close to factory as you can get for cheap.

I used this in a few places and the only issue I had with it was when I went to mess with the wires I had wrapped, it broke. It does hold the wires together, that's for dang sure, just doesn't hold up under wear when working with the wires or if it rubs on things hard like the intake manifold.

They sell 3M at Lowe's/Home Depot and AZ here in Memphis.

I'm pretty sure I used 3M too, it looks really good/factory, I guess I'll see how it holds up. I plan to convert my car to 89 SMEC eventually so if this 3M stuff starts to fall apart I'll have to find something else.....
