Just put a 90 CTD with a 518 trans in a 85 Crew cab Dodge. Currently controlling overdrive manually with a dash mounted switch. Anyone know of an easy way to set it up so it is controlled automatically?

I'm confused. I thought we were talking about a 1985 Ram. :confused: I want to see pictures of the crew cab Cummins. I've always wanted a first generation Ram crew cab with a Cummins.

Well, Kevin (or anyone else) - if you want to do the conversion, I have the perfect truck! 1985 white crew cab SRW 1-ton long bed 4x2, ex USAF truck, all rust replaced with metal (only rear wheelhouse tops, driver side front floor, and a small patch in the cargo bed), ready for prep and paint (new metal is sealed and primered). New black vinyl seats, maroon dash and doorpanels, new windshield. Factory 360/4v needs carb to run (quadrajunk), 727, open Dana rear, no a/c but heater does work (drove the truck and got it inspected before I boogered up the carb rebuild, whoops). I was going to do the conversion, already have the 518 although with an LA bellhousing....but don't have the time to worry about it anymore. I'd love to see someone do the conversion on it, though - it's too nice to let it die a rusty dented Contractor Truck death. I do have pics available if you're interested, just drop me an email at racer-x@erols.com. Truck's in MD, about an hour from Cecil.

Looks like a great truck. I have one in the works as well. I have a 92 CTD Club Cab Dually that is going to get a Crew Cab. The cab is in paint, new front clip is jam painted and the box is under way. I also am changing over to a 5-speed at the same time. I have a G-360 but would much rather go with a NV4500. I will try to post a few pics as well.

look at the bottom of this page (518 conversion). They sell switches to control the overdrive from trans oil pressure.

Those switches are nice, but wont work on a Diesel application, as they include a Vacuum switch, and a Diesel does not produce Vacuum like a Gas engine. Give Stephan a call at Diesel Trans Technology, they were working on a controller for the 47Re trans, that should work on the Rh.
well, any non-turbo engine operates in a vacuum. But your right, I keep forgetting that most of these turbo diesels cruise down the highway with some amount of boost.

Actually, diesels never have vacuum, they don't even have a throttle body.. The intake mani is pretty much wide open.. Even a non turbo diesel '80ish Rabbit won't make any vacuum unless the air filter is plugged.. heh.. The throttle controls the amount of fuel injected.. Diesels are a very different animal.. ;)

unless the diesel has a turbo, they have to operate in a vacuum. they can not produce more than atmospheric pressure unless they have outside help. the vacuum draw pulls air/fuel into the cylinders, thats where it originates from, so unless they have a turbo, there is no way they can operate with out some vacuum. Now, a n/a diesel engine does not have MUCH vacuum, maybe just a few (1 or 2, etc) in/Hg of vacuum, but they do have a little caused by the 'suction' of the downward pistons, and they can not run at above atmospheric pressue with out a turbo (or some other forced induction)

my "argument" isnt so you can use the items I orginally posted in this thread. That company makes many options to work the lockup converter, not just vacuum switches.
my argument is that a diesel does make some vacuum....... when I was in school taking a graduate level class on IC engines, I can assure you there was some vacuum on the diesel we had on the dyno stand.

My buddy did this swap a couple years ago. He took an 1985 cab, with a 93 drivetrain. The truck has been a great driver and looks great. It has a full power front seat from a 1998 Ram Cummins, the rear seat is done in leather too. Its a really nice cruiser to go on long trips with. Ice cold A/C, tons of room and enough power to pull a loaded car trailer with ease.
