Can't do that... you will have low oil pressure... Its easy to remove the chain. Just undo a sprocket bolt. The shaft will slide out ..

Use a bolt cutter.:thumb:

Bolt cutter would work fine. I would not leave them in (balance shafts) non-functional. You risk oil pressure issues. It is easy to take the cahin off and re-install it.

It's a personal preferance..

what is the best way to remove the chain for reuse?

Just take the bolts off the sprockets...

You can't do that Ken, the crank has to come out if you dont' cut the chain.

I find the easiest is remove the tin cover, use a grinder and grind off to rivet heads, then pry off the link plate and the chain falls off.

I just did my friends Shadow this way, oil pressure after-10-15 at idle, 50-60 moving along, :thumb:

To reuse the chain, You have to remove the crankshaft. Cheaper to buy a new chain which BTW, I have one, OE Dodge with the guides, :eyebrows:

Use a bolt cutter.:thumb:

I did the same about 2 years ago, and I have not noticed any oil pressure issues?

I cut the chain with a Dremel tool and a small cut-off wheel. I shrouded the area I was grinding with a rag to prevent bits of metal getting anywhere I didn't want it getting. I'd buy a new chain if you want might want to use the balance shafts later.

so i can just cut the chain and have bad things happen?

You cut the chain and be done with it. Some notice more vibration, others don't. I noticed more on my friends 89 2.5L Shadow.

If your going to do that you might aswell take the crap out too. http://www.hometown.aol.com/mopartek/balanceplug.html I used that method to plug the oil feed. Its simple and it works. Some people have oil starvation problems if road racing after doing that but I haven't noticed any problems in my minivan ;). You can put a 2.2l oil pan on it to take care of that if your worried, think you also need the dipstick.

I was a bit dissapointed to feel the vibration when I cut my chain. Most said that it was not that noticable. I would disagree, however it only took me a day or two to get used to it though.

I couldn't get used to it. After I had my engine balanced, its gone, sooooooooooooooooo smooth,

Did anyone else notice that while idling in gear it vibrates pretty noticable, but if you put it in neutral or bring the RPMs up to 1,100 or so the vibration goes away? That's the way it's been for 4 out of 5 of our TMs.

ok but why you whant to cause a vibration in your motor ?

Murphy

your not doing it to cause more vibration, you do it to loose weight....like adding a lighter flywheel....and it makes it soo much easier to do the rod bearings with that thing out

I used bolt cutters on the chain, tapped the hole, pluged it with a plug covered in RTV and then added the bolt and large washer to cover the hole like in the link in some previous post. I think if i didnt remove those BS i wouldnt even have oil pressure right now

Just FYI, get yourself a 2.2 pickup while you're there. The 2.5 pickup is too long!;)

And when you have the balance shafts in and chain connected your engine has to turn the balance shafts as it rotates. That is how it conteracts the engine vibration, when you remove them your engine doesnt have to work so hard. Thus giving you free horse power and less weight. There have been many arguments about how much horse power it gives you but i would think it would be safe to say atleast 5hp. That is free horsepower:thumb:

i noticed it is a little louder but hey at least it don't sound like a pissed-off bumble bee like those jap craps do
