Cant find an omni. Can get a rabitt(84, 2 door) shell for cheap. Any one do this swap?

can't imagine it working
I know our early omni's came with 1.7 vw's
but the 2.2 / 2.5 with trans is a lot longer the vw combination
the rabbits motor pratically touches the frame rail
no way you could run power steering
the mount on the pass. side is about 3" in dia. and bolts right to the block
so minus the the t-belt thickness adn you got about 1.5" left between the vw motor and frame let alone a 2.2
but then again anything is possible

Damn. I was planning to try and shoehorn my 2.2/523 combo into my wife's cabriolet when the engine dies one of these days.

Oh well...maybe VW makes an engine that's worth a crap...haven't heard of one or seen one, but I guess it's possible. ;)

Go search on TD.com - someone did it, sounded pretty simple too. Put a 2.2 in a ~'84 cabriolet...

wow, suprised it would fit easily

vw motor, do a hybrid 20/20
2.0 93-95 aba bottom end (forged rods and crank)
w/ a 20v 1.8 T head
good flow w/ strong bottom end
I'm doing one now for my vw caddy

2.2 T1 into a Rabbit (http://www.turbododge.com/forums/f4/f22/132184-swapping-2-2t-into-rabbit-what-2.html)

The signal-to-noise ratio in that thread is pretty typical of TD.com these days, but thre's some good info there...

Damon the 1.8T will never lose!! That's all you have to remember when dealing with VW. :)

Well, I admit the 1.8t would probably be great in that little tiny car of ours, but I don't really know anything about them, and my head is full of all sorts of irrelevant facts about 2.2 dodges, ya know...

Oh well, I'll probably get 2 or 3 more years on the vert's old engine, anyhow...just have to truck it in the slow lane, if you know what I'm saying.

if your doing a 1.8T SWITCH THE RODS
they're junk
275hp o.k.ish 300hp not for long
very small rods cross section with a big oil hole bored up the center
and the wrist pins are small as crap also
I've swapped 5 motors this year alone do to stretched rod failure
I'll have to post up some pics

Not to mention the timing belt that goes in about 60k (before the scheduled service) on the early engines. It is an interference engine so it takes out all 20 valves...

never takes out all 20 valves
Out of all the motors I've done so far the most was 8
they are $10 ea. intake and $18 exhaust
3 of the motors the guys were racing had the motors above 5,000 in 4-5 gear
and only took out 2-4 valves which is typical
and the heads still bring $250-300 for an AEB (larger port head) with 3 bent valves
$500-750 if it's good and these are 100,000 mile cyl. heads

But yes the vw/ audi guys are very religious about getting there T-belt replaced usually 70-80,000 miles though

we actually had a passat with a broken tensioner and the customer DROVE the car to the shop for us to fix it not knowing what the problem was and never skipped a tooth !

anybody really see this 2.2 in a vw?
the people on TD.com really don't seem to believe the guy either
like I said anything is possible but I can't see it being as easy as he was first stating

All I need is a shell and I'd give it a try. Always been a MkI with dual rounds fan :)

Me too! Only new car I've ever owned. 1978 Rabbit, drove the hell out of it. Put 118,000 miles on it in 7 years and it had 150 compression across the board when I sold it.
