It was good to see you out there Terry! I enjoyed watching you run the van and the Sundance. I was really hoping to see 11.9xxx on that last run, but you will get there!

Hmmm, so I got all winter to go nucking futs on my spare motor, then I can annoy the hell out of everybody by breaking into the 11s with an N/A 3.0 powered minivan... :p

Yeah I know, I'm dreaming, 250 whp if I'm lucky, low 14s if I'm lucky....

But mebbe someone will lend me a bottle... strip down to race weight of 3000lb (inc me) and a 100 shot of nawwwzzzzz...

But keep that on the down low, if I decide to (or get spare cash to) go for it and Simon gets wind, he might not sell me a set of those 3.0 race cams until after the season starts. :D

That is awesome Terry! What is your 60' time on the 12.0 run? How much boost are you running now?

That is awesome Terry! What is your 60' time on the 12.0 run? How much boost are you running now?

Thanks!

My 60' numbers are ranging from 1.80 - 1.85 since I changed the gears from 3.72 to 3.22 and went back to the M/T 26 x 8.5 slick ;)

I've been running the same boost since I've had the van out this year.....I've just been making small changes to improve the ET. The MPH hasn't really changed. I ran 112 once but I've ran about 60 passes now in the 110-111 mph range :)

I'm working on a couple of things right now to see if I can bump it over the hump into the 11's :thumb:

Taking that big garage door off the back might get you there!:)

How much boost have you been running all year? I've been a little out of pocket this last year trying to get my car back together.

RoadWarrior222

Taking that big garage door off the back might get you there!:)

While that might gain a fraction in the first 1/8th it would probably lose it again in the 2nd. Just coz it removes what little aerodynamic surface there is that tucks air in behind the van. i.e. the slightly angled edges of the door.

Here's what I'm planning for an aerodynamic improvement on my minivan, mainly for highway mpg reasons, I wouldn't be surprised if it got a couple of mph or a 10th or 2 though 'coz aerodynamics are getting significant at those speeds and times. When you start hitting 60 with 2/3 of the track left, it's time to think about it. So, I'm getting pool noodles... yes pool noodles... and slicing them lengthwise into halves and quarter rounds. I'm putting the quarter rounds along the top and side of the tailgate. This fairs in the sharp angle of the gate and air should attach to them long enough to turn more of an angle behind the van and fill in the vacuum better. These will be sprayed body color of course, not left neon pink. The half rounds will go into the rear of the wheelarches, to stop them catching air, sprayed black.

Now to organise the flow and prevent buffeting at speed from uneven vortex shedding, I'm going to use turbulators to generate small controlled vortices, which can also help the bulk of the airflow to "stick down" to the curvatures of the tailgate fairings, and may also aid vacuum filling, cutting bluff body drag more. I'm going to use 3/8 tall closed cell foam tape (made for draft insulation) it has to be over 1/4 of an inch high because that's the depth of the boundary layer for our typical speeds and Reynolds numbers so any feature smaller than that is aerodynamically insignificant. It should be closed cell otherwise it will soak up water. I'm gonna paint this too. It's self adhesive and should stick pretty well if you clean off the surface first. Placement... between the ends of the center pair of roof rack rub strips, I'm making a V, with the point ending on the edge of the tailgate metalwork, cutting it of course so the tailgate can still open. Then on the outer two rub strips, I'm making a line from each of those parallel to the sides of the vee, and then doing the same at the end of the roof rails, so it will look like this \\\/// (sort of) If foam tape is too ghetto for you, there are bumper protector stick on things you can get that look almost identical to the roof rails, chrome on black rubber, those could be used instead. Then on the side of the van, ahead of the light cluster (which of course doesn't have the pool noodle strip on) I'm putting two strips ahead of that, angled low at front high at rear, same approx angle as those on roof. (We want the side vortices to have the same handedness as those shed by the roof, so they blend together and don't suck back at the tailgate) Then on the rear side windows a compromise, one strip on the forward edge of the black surround at the back. Straight down the edge, this is just a simple tumble strip, and should still have some effect when you've got those windows cracked. Being on the black edge bit it won't impair visibility and won't look too odd if black.

That probably all sounds a bit crackpot, but there's solid physics behind it.

I'm waiting to get a chance to do some bodywork and touch ups to my van before I get around to this on it, gotta have something to stick it to.

That's only phase 1 of what I have planned. Hope to do a belly pan, and rear diffuser. Also want to experiment with leading edge of the arch flare to toss more air over the arch, also want a fairing behind and ahead of each wheel below the arch line. Also going to experiment with front air dams with lip/chin spoilers (that prolly comes next)

Realised the mini tows almost a semi-trucks worth of air when I got 40mpg drafting trucks on one long trip. Not all that close either.

Terry you need this to push some of the air around the van and not let it go under it :) Might be just enough :) http://www.pnw-sdac.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1143

Wouldn't lowering the van down do the same thing without increasing the frontal area?

Lowering the van would actually decrease the frontal area by cover more of the front tires ;)

I don't know if it helped me or not?

I couldn't run the air dam drag racing due to the lowering and small slicks but with me running the larger slicks this or next year, I should be able to use the air dam. You can feel it working, the front end feels more glued on the highway and runs cooler.

go direct port. you are taking a big chance with a single shot above 50. fuel does not flow well through the intake.

Huge +1... good point... if you do go with a single fogger, you need to keep it in the throttle a little after you lift off the button to make sure any extra gas in the intake gets sucked in! :thumb:
