My EGT guage goes haywire sometimes (like varies from 1700 at idle to 33 at WOT), I'm gonna ground it to the bat tommorrow, but was wondering if cleaning the thermocoupler with brake-kleen would be safe.

I'd be interested in this subject too. Since my turbo blew up throwing all the oil into my motor. My EGT gauge is flaky as hell too.

Then it gets warmer, I was going to check the connections behind the gauge. I already checked the probe's connection.

Cleaning the sensor will only take care of slow heat changes.... aka sensor response. It sounds like a grounding issue. When these things go flaky, it is either an intermitent short/open, or there is a voltage bias that happens from floating grounds.

what kind of life-span do these things have?

i rewelded the bung and it seems to be working better. I didn't fix the ground yet, i'll do that tommorrow, spent the last couple of days fixing stuff on the head.

I have a similar problem, and here is what I was told;

The EGT gage uses a thermocouple to read the temperature, which has an output of about 2mV at an absolute maximum. This super-small signal makes the gage very, very susceptible to electrical noise. Ever wonder why cars don't use thermocouples instead of expensive thermistors? This is why! Make sure you run the EGT gage wires as far away from other electronics as possible to help reduce noise... or use a differential amplifier (not possible), or use better shielding on the wire, etc.

I am going to try not only a better ground, but shielding the wires as well.

I've been quoted! WOOT!

What type of EGT gage do you run? I have the Westach gage and it is only grounded through the probe.
