i got this email frommy friend, I know some of you guys work at dealerships and might have an idea of what it might be...?

>It's a 2000 jeep Cherokee sport 4wd, 4.0l.
>
>The mechanic friend checked all the fuses with a handy gadget he has
>that emits a tone and they all checked out fine. Also, he switched the
>relay for the fuel pump with the one for the air conditioner under the
>hood and that didn't help.
>
>I have unplugged and replugged all the connectors to the computer, and
>also reset the battery.
>
>Also, he read the codes with his Solaris computer and states there are
>none, the fuel pump is working fine, it has a crank signal up until it
>quits (it is not cutting out before hand causing the quit)
>
>He says the computer checks out fine, the fuses check out fine, the
>crank position sensor is fine, the fuel pump is fine. He claims it's
>the security system on the car, even though it doesn't have one that I
>am aware of. Apparently he can get on a website called NAPAFIX.com or
>something and it gives him some known issues that cause similar problems
>and this is one he said it called out.
>
>Here is what it is doing in nut shell. If starts and runs, as it starts
>the RPMS rev up to 1,000-1,500 like normal when it starts, as it idles
>back down to idle rpm, it just quits, cuts off and stops running. It
>also does the same thing when you start it with your foot on the gas, it
>runs up to 3-4,000 rpms and then quits after a second or two max. it
>will then start right back up and the process repeats. Over and over and
>over again.
>
>I am lost with this piece, but all I want it to do is run long enough
>for me to get it to the dealer to trade in.
>
>It has been for the last year or so, randomly quiting the same way after
>you start it, but then you wait a minute and start it and it would start
>right up and run..so its something that has happened over time, it
>didn't just start out of the blue.
>
>John

On most chryslers if it's the factory alarm system shutting it down, that can be fixed by locking and then unlocking the doors using the key.

calling him to have him lock and unlock, unknown about the coil, i'll ask him, but i think it has individual coil packs. so even if one was bad it would still run on 5 cyl right?

oh also, he doesnt have a factory alarm.... but the mechanic he took it to says thats the issue... *shrug*

it has a coil rail. What color is the key? If the orgional is a grey head it has a chip, if the have a spare cut at a store it doesnt have a chip in it and it will start and run for a second then die. Or could be a problem with the system.

Sounds like a bad computer to me. The computer has an alarm function, as stated earlier. When you unplug the battery, you have to lock and unlock the doors. Otherwise the fuel pump will not stay running. THe computer isn't showing any codes because its probably bad. Brains on the 2000's it seems like to do that. I worked on a Dakota that had the same problem after putting a new motor in. Its usually a short to the brain. Try that.

IMO it needs sticking on a scope to see if it is getting clean cam and crank signals in the right sequence. Tests so far seem to indicate it's just putting out "a signal", so saying the sensors are definitely doing their job right from that is like saying your hard drive cannot possibly be corrupted because the light comes on.
