View Full Version : Changing Timing Belt

I tried to find this info by searching but had no luck. I'm just learning where things are hid in the forum. Anyway, is there a way to change the timing belt without puling the engine in an 1986 Daytona/Laser?

Take off the plastic covers and such on the passenger side, prop the motor up on a jack or wood blocks, loosed the tensioner. Then take off the belts for power steering and alternator. Take off the crank pully and then you should be able to slip the belt off once your take out the motor mount.

Thanks for the help. You all might be able to help me enough that I can get this car on the road again. If you're successful you've done the almost impossible.

I know I'm sounding mechanically challenged (which I am) but if I slightly raise the engine by jacking up the oil pan, will I damage the pan on these cars?

NO... Do it all the time. Use some wood to disperse the load.

If the passenger side mount is taken out yes. But, you will want to place a board under the pan to distribute weight. If you put a jack under there alone it's likely it will 'bite' into the pan or dent it.
