View Full Version : Bought my first Shelby!

Yesterday I picked up my very first Shelby (and true "turbododge" for that matter.) ! It is a 1989 Shelby CSX-VNT. The car has all the Shelby items including the "Shelby" floormats! It does need cosmetic tlc (i.e front and rear skirts) and a good bath, tho. I'm so thrilled as I've been trying to buy one for years now!

I was wondering if that came from Cindy, the other cars in the background and the brand X pickup looked familiar...

Looks like a good project car, a little TLC and it will be really nice. I haven't owned an 89 CSX yet and want to get one eventually also.

Only thing I saw wrong with it she stated. The mats where probably the worst part of the interior(nothing unexpecting there;)) The car looked in need of a good bath and it would sparkle again. The interior would look much better with a detailed vacuuming and cleaning. The car was one I would have taken home with me if I had brought a truck/trailer and make check book... Never again will I carry cash on a road trip, would have even loved the lancer she was selling. That thing was mint!

Same here. I was wondering where I saw that modified front spoiler before.

I knew someone would reconize it as one of Cindy's cars. :) I'll be buying to some new tires here shortly so i can actually drive it and see what else it needs. The fiberrides are comming off and I'm putting some aftermarket 15's on. After seeing how hard those wheels are to come by, I don't want to use them. lol! I think it's #78; but I need to look again.

And no this car will not get a roof scoop. ;)

For once I own an older dodge that's not a 3.0L V6! Allthough, I'm not giving up on the blue shadow v6 turbo project.

That is what she told me too. lol If you ever get to see his 89 before me(planning on going back for that dyno!) grab some pics if you can. He had locked the doors so Cindy couldnt show me under the hood. She shared alittle info like 250HP:nod: on a VNT! Pretty impressive there. What are your plans with your new ride, besides the front and rear bumper replacement:p ?

haha! yea, i do. i just haven't had a chance to edit it in photoshop yet. i don't have the 99 neon anymore. well, i do... but it's going to be parted out. i kinda had an unfortunate accident with it. now i'm in need of a new daily driver...

as far as plans for the csx. i'll probably do similaer mods like cindy did. i want to keep it vnt. i think 250hp would be just fine for the csx. that's why i have the blue shadow. it's not a numbered car so it doesn't really matter what i do to it.

MaryBeth it's looking much better... I think the FWD-P staff, you(and those that joined for the trip/seen the car in person) and myself can really understand:p... If I remember right, the crack did look repairable. +1 on some gold 16" pumpers.

ACR Turtle: You are too funny! :D

Thanks for the comments on the car! I did a quick photoshop of what the car's new wheels will look like. They are not pumpers, (but i do love the idea of gold pumpers!) I just had these wheels laying around from a Neon. So I figured I use them for the time being. The are lightweight; which is a plus!

ACR Turtle: You are too funny! :D

I try. I seriously do like those cars those. I hope once the "S" car is done that I kind find one around the same shape as yours. Too nice out of my price range, too beat and its too expensive and time consuming to restore. I don't know if they're the same bolt pattern, but I seem to remember Pontiac Sunbirds? around 91-93 having a similar looking wheel as the fiberides. Maybe paint some of those gold and install them. They may have been 14's though.

Yea, im not a big fan of that auction, because he makes it sound like you cant get them made anymore:

"they told me they won't sell one at a time anymore because they don't stock them and to make one they have to pull the mold just for one part is not worth it."

THis is totally incorrect. I called Kaminari and they said just give them a couple weeks advance notice and they will make me one.....it would be just over 400 shipped to my door.

Thats next on my list.

I ordered a rear bumper cover from Johnny at the start of the year. It was shipped to me on the 14th (Haven't gotten it yet). I am no longer working on the project I bought it for, and do not need it. If anyone wants it, it is yours for $75 less than the price (It was either $300 or $350, have to look), plus shipping

Well, here's an update on the shelby car.

Installed new front and rear brakes, power steering pump, water pump, replaced spark plugs, rotor, cap, wires, timing belt and tensioner, and did an oil change and replaced the air filter and belts. Its new exhaust system is on order, as well. Gotta love cars that have been sitting for a while!

Took it for a ride.... to find out the clutch is completely wasted. :( The thing slipped so bad and the aroma of burnt friction material gave me a headache. lol! So I won't be making it to the local Mopar event Saturday. On a positive note... the one time the car engaged first gear without slipping out.... :) :) :) it hit 15psi and I was all smiles! This is one fun car!!

So anyone have any recomedations on what clutch I should buy for this car?

Haven't really decided. Started on the Eagle Talon this weekend. (I'm trying to make one good Talon out of two... long story.) So once this DSM is up and running, then I'll go back to the CSX. I won't know all of what the Talon needs until the engine is in it and running. If you still have your front bumper I'll probably just get it from you. I'll let you know. :)

What kind of power do you want to put down? I've used TU's TII/TIII hybrid clutch with good results, though I started to overpower it. I moved up to TU's kevlar clutch. I like the clamping force on this clutch. It can be a little chattery but seemes to be smoothing out as more miles are put on. A lot of people like the 4 puck clutch's as well.
