For about a year I been thinking about doing this kinda setup. My idea is to get a TIII 2.2 dohc turbo engine and convert it into a non-turbo setup. Grab that non-turbo setup and put it in an Omni (lighter) and make it a 5spd. my idea was to be fuel economy but quick at the same time like my buddy's cars. This idea came to mind when all my boys were going at it on the highway one night (escort gt 1.8, 2.0 laser, 2.5 BMW, 2.2 accord) and i was in my moms car cause my car was at home getting fixed. My friends cars are all the same power output so it was fun to watch them race. But my reason is these cars are quick but don't use much gas and are very economy. I have a turbo lebaron and thats my pride and joy but my car is just way to fast for these guys and sometimes i feel bad cause im usually the fastest car their and none of them could come close to me except for my boys BMW but my car sucks gas like crazy and isn't very economy. So, doing this project will be well worth it cause not only would i get good fuel milage but great economy too for an daily drive and its DOHC!!!. But this project is mainly for a daily driver.

With the right computer you could get 37-40MPG on the freeway and low to mid 30's around town and still have tons if not more power than you have now. What year/car do you have?

Seems like you might as well just look for a 2.0 Neon and skip the fab work. The weight isn't that much different.

a buddy has a 2.4 n/a in his Omni. I still like my 37MPG turbo 2.5 Tona better.

I have an 88 Chrysler lebaron turbo with a TII engine and alot of goodies. even tho my car trip computer says i gets 35-45 miles to the gallon i still have to put gas in it ever 4 days (i do drive alot with school and all) and i use super but my idea is to have a TIII 2.2 non-turbo engine with high compression pistons and run regular and it'll prolly last me 1 and a half weeks. I think it would be kinda neat to have a non-turbo TIII and i hate neon except the srt-4. I want my own kind of engine that i want. I driven my fathers N/A Chrysler laser 2.5 and its kind of slow but man does that thing get great MPG. But i want something Non-turbo and Dohc and mopar.

Get a neon engine.

Get a neon engine.

Is it possible to get a 2.5 block and drop a 2.4 dohc head from a neon or a 2.2 TIII head. I want the most Hp out of stock component parts with miner tunes.

No turbo:confused:

You can get great mileage from a well tuned turbo mill.. Just keep your foot off the loud pedal.

If you get the tall deck 2.5 it looks like you could pop on a DOHC head without as many mods as a common block but without the turbo it'd be a slug.

Are we talking escort 1.8 gt slow or 2.2 turbo slow. with the setup i want be worth it or will i get better Hp out of a 2.4 swap rather than a 2.5 with a TIII head or a 2.4.

2.4 in my buddies GLH running Megash!t runs high 15's last time out. Still think it's a waste of time. My ShelbyZ annialates it and get's the same or slightly better MPG.

If fuel economy is the goal than don't go with a 2.5! Smaller cubic inches gives better economy, even if you are on the throttle more.
I'd swap a DOHC 2.0 head on before a lotus head, first off all it will be way cheaper! Plus no fabbing is needed since you can just use the manifolds the way they are already.

ya i bet are cars do great with MPG but i also think your buddy with the 2.4 fills his gas tank ever 2 weeks and you fill yours ever 4 days or so. Thats something i wouldnt mind having my lebaron gets 35mpg but yet i fill it ever 4 days.

so your saying a 2.4 will swap right into our cars.

I'd have to agree with everyone here that a 2.2 with the right computer will get you better mileage, and be much cheaper than anything else. My stock VNT lebaron weighs almost 3300 pounds and gets well over 30mpg averaged, so probably 35+ on the highway. That aside, turbo cars actually do get better mileage from what I've read on MPG.com but most people don't notice it because they can't refrain from getting into boost. Just depends how bad you want it.

If I get 32/37 how am I filling my tank every 4 days and my buddy is filling his every 2 weeks? Actually it's probably the other way around. He has quite a long commute on the freeway each morning while I have a short 10 minute jaunt down the freeway to work. I don't floor it too much cause well I just don't need too. But anything over about 3psi has the calibration going to non-O2 feedback and jumping to a rich a/f ratio of 12.3:1. Today I probably used WOT the most I have in a month, which was a full 4-5 times messing around with my girlfriend in her jeep. Can't beat awesome power and pretty good MPG. I'm 1 MPG up on the new MiniCooper S which as a much smaller motor and direct injection.

well your right maybe its all in the commute you have but mine is not bad but I'm always on the road. So something non-turbo and 4 cylinder with small CID wouldn't hurt either besides I'm trying to keep the mileage low and i don't want anything to brake.

did they make 2.2 non turbos

Yes, there called TBI's. You can swap on a flex fuel system and have a custom cal.

TIII's are hard to work as you need the front accesorries but if you going to do it, use a Neon head on a 2.2 litre, get some flat tops and you should achieve your goals.

2.0/2.4's will drop in but need fab work and custom mounts.
