Ok so this afternoon I got on the freeway and the car sounded rough. Thought maybe it was a wheel bearing or road noise. Fired it up later tonight and you can hear it grinding at idle and the water pump pulley wobbles pretty good even though the bolts are tight. It's the 2nd pump this car has eaten since I've known it in the last 6 years. My question is where to get a waterpump. Napa work? Autostoned. Schucks/kragen/checker??? I'm gonna grind 3 fins off when I get it but I need to get it in this weekend!

Thanks!

I picked up one from autozone. It was in stock and less than $30 IIRC.

2 pumps in 6 years isn't bad, especially if your revving the piss out of it. Most waterpumps are fine, now you can get a new pump for the price of a rebuilt. I have used Carter, Fenco, AC Delco and there all good.

Watch your belt tension, if your too tight, it will destroy the bearings alot faster.

+1
I learned early on from overtensioning belts to stop squealing that it's a sure way to kill the bearings in your accessories.

A new WP from Chrysler is about $43

$56+5 core, It's a rebuilt part, Has an R in front of the Chrysler part #. I didn't think it was too bad so I bought it. Ground off 3 fins today at work, gonna rip the old one out, port the housing and pop it all back in tomorrow hopefully. Thanks guys.

Why are you grinding out 3 fins?

It's worth 3hp and less cavatation.

Very interesting, :eyebrows: How did you figure out the 3HP?

Ed Peters stated it years ago, think it's on thedodgegarage.com After doing it and having "The Pope" port out the waterpump housing and the short 4-6 mile drive home last night I feel as if doing what I did is worth more like 5-10hp. Noticed a couple more inches of vacuum at normal cruising speeds on a route I take alot, the engine definately revs up faster and the cooling was fine even though it's 35-40 degrees out, but I do have a 190 T-stat with an .050" hole and the scanner fluctuated from 176-180 the whole time.

The stupid part. I completely spaced out that there is an electric waterpump on the market for our cars. After feeling this kind of gain I can only imagine what going to a full electric system would of done. Tempted to get an electric one anyway. Wonder how much draw it would cause. Either way it's a worthwhile mod.

How do you know when you're waaaaaaay too into this car "thing"?

When you port your waterpump housing!

If it works, it works...the idea just sounds funny though.

1 HP per fin? Sounds fishy.

You feel 5-10hp? was the old pump bound up?

Hahahaa, I ported all the casting flash below the head gasket surface, made the holes more even, ported the waterpump hole to the o-ring, :thumb:

The 3hp is direct from Ed Peter's mouth. Probably gonna take the pump off and go electric though after this. Put the 3 fin pump on my 87 T1 New Yorker Auto :)

Got any pictures of what you did to the pump?

The Pope did the porting. I need to get some porting tools of my own as I would of taken a bit more time and made the opening to the block just a bit more round. But it's way better than it was.

Anything of the actual impeller?

Any updates on this, I have my pump apart and was looking at the impellers last night, now did you gride the entire blade off or just the vertical part. I think I'm going to give it a shot and see how well it cools, I figure a new water pump isn't to expensive if it doesn't work.
