You may have seen my BadAss Neon thread... I have not started the conversion yet, but I am not exactly sold on the idea of building a Neon... maybe cuz I avoid tight packages like L-bodies? Maybe because you could not buy a Neon in 1987? Not sure...

So here is the poll...

I'll let you Turbo-Mopar.com enthusists tell me where they think the JE pistoned, Aluminum rodded 2.4L should go...

In the Neon? Light weight... easy swap...

http://www.badassperformance.com/mrides/neon/neonx.jpg

Or in the Z? 10pt cage... FAST system already in it...

The Neon isn't an easy swap either.

Whats the intended use of the Neon?

Definitely the Daytona. The FAST system and the cage are the clincher.
And I don't think the Neon swap will be any easier.

I know you're an 8v guy for that particular car, but I've got to go with the Z!

Neon. You couldn't buy that motor in 1987 either.

Yes, I love the old school 8V, and that is my test car...

its a toss up, if you want to go fast I would go w/ the neon. But then your going to need a cage and MS or similar prop more of a track car.

I think its pretty close to even on the swap part nepending on what trans you would use in the Z.

If you want more of a one of a kind car go w/ the Z. If its not going to be an all out drag car that you are going for a specific class then it just depends on what looks better(the Z) and how they ride/feel.

Whats your Z weigh??

Neon. The z is already setup for an 8v, both mechanically, electrically and tune wise. A cage for the neon is less than $400 for a 8 point bolt in, and MSnS is a cheap ems to replace the neon computer, or if it's an early enough neon it will have the same 60way connector used on a SBEC and you could just repin and run a sbec instead.

This leaves you with two fast cars for a reasonably investment, and I think you'll find the neon to be a lot more fun to drive than the z.

The Z not a l-body but a Neon ?????? :thumb:

I say the Z. why spend more money making another car ready for speed when you've already got a car that looks sweeet. I love shelby Z's and I always thought neons looked gay from day 1. The SRT4 and the R/T's of 98-99 are the only ones I ever liked. Just my opinion, but its seems like the tonas don't get enough credit and dropping a 2.4 in it will definitely make it one helluva an L body killer.

Put the 2.4 in the Z and the shadow can be the 8v test car. Hell the shadow is already an 8v test car, its testing how long lw rods will last.

Give me the motor in the Z so you have a place for the new one.

i say neon. set it up not only for drag but also for handling as well. a neon with konis, MP X-high springs and large antisways is an amazing handling car.

people give the neon all kinds of crap but its a much better chassis than any of our td's. much stiffer stock and still crazy light. i cant wait to get my wife something newer and confiscate her neon.

How about if I alter my vote...

Since you have a thing for the Shadows... Why not put it in one of them? Keep the Daytona 8v.

Neon = PL body, part P body, part L-body. If a Charger and a Shadow were welded together it would look more like a Daytona than a Neon if you rubbed your eyes really hard and squinted. Thus P+L = G. So based on this logic, I say go with the Daytona, do the math it works out every time.

I think you just proved PL=G, so either choice would be the same?

I am going to have to say neon just because it is so much lighter. I am an omni guy though, so perhaps that is why I always go for light weight.

It is going to be a 5-speed no matter what it goes in... probably A568/523 long gear hybrid.

It is going to be a street car set up for street driveability and drag racing.

The Z weighs ~ 2535lbs with the 10 pt cage and with the current 2.2L setup (before lightening) w/o me (200lbs more) in it last summer at Topeka.

Id put it in the Z... Swap the Z motor into the shadow... and then the 8v shadow motor into the neon...

I say leave the 2.4 where it lies:eyebrows:
Personally.... My mom's first brand new car ever was a 95 Neon Expresso.(god how I hate that name!)

Dang, your Z is ultra light for what it is. That car weighs less than my SVO did and those things are considered really light. 2800 lbs give or take w/o driver. I will have to go to the scales when I get my charger going.. Neons DON'T take crashes well compaired to a daytona.. Its the last thing you want to have happen but its true..

I would not say it is "ultra light"... it started life at ~3000 lbs. Now with no heater or A/C, gutted dash board, fuel cell instead of tank, manual steering rack... etc.

Dean,

Do you know which GM tranny has the same diff as the 288?

I have sold a few OBX washer kits to guys running the F23 (Getrag 287) which seems like it would have to be the one you are referring to...

If that is the one then an OBX LSD is only around $435 shipped from ebay so transmission cost aside it would be the same cost as adding an OBX to a 523 or T-350.

That makes it a lot cheaper than adding a quaife.

As far as I know its the same trans used in the supercharged cobalt that comes with a quaffe.......

+As you can see I don't post enough to stay current...but I will try to change that!
