using forged when is egt to high and un safe above 1600deg ?? 1650deg

depending where your egt probe is, i would still shy away from 1600. the pistons may be fine, but i have had cyl. heads get damaged from it. looked like moon craters in the combustion chambers. the forged pistons just reflect some of the heat to the head. i believe gary has some picts of some forged pistons that saw 1600+ on the dodge garage, not pretty.
hope it helps

You do not want to elevate the temps. 1500 is still the egt you are looking for. The forged is for detonation protection not heat protection.

They say 1500 is the max and I would aim for that as its a nice margin, but I constantly hit 1600-1700 on my old engine with no damage, forged JE's.

The temp probe was in the collector, just before the turbo.

When I had an EGT gauge in my car, the EGTs would always top 1600° towards the top of 4th gear. Never caused any harm. This was a stock 2.2 TII block.

I'm sure the EGTs are still topping 1600°.. I just don't have the gauge in the car to verify. ;)

I had mine go over 2K before. The gauge was on its second lap around.

Ya, while pistons can take the heat because they are forged for detonation reasons, valves, heads, valve seats, etc cannot take that kind of heat all the time. I know I dont want to see anything higher then 1400 in the traps. If a very long pull up a hill, 1450 will be the most I would want to see.

i know the forged was extra insurance reason i ask is im looking at gauges and a lot of them max out at 1600 soi didnt want to buy one that would be not enough

thats it

I have a friend with a Eclipse he races and he said his motor runs the best at 1800 degrees. He bought the 2000 degree egt's when they first came out and they were kind of spendy then I'm not sure what they are now. He has his probe on the manifold on #4 cylinder.

not all thermocouples are accurate...check it against ambient temps.

Most gauges won't be as accurate in that low of a range relative to what it should normally read.

Show me a engine tuned by EGTs and I will show you a DOG, Show me a engine tuned by EGO and spark plug read and I will show you a winner. Throw away that EGT gauge untill AFTER the combination is tuned!

I think when tuning, people sometimes forget the effect that ignition timing has on EGT. For example, somebody running big boost might pull some timing for detonation resistance. This causes the EGT to go up. Seeing the higher EGT, most people would add fuel to compensate causing the engine to run too rich and make less power.
