I'm thinking about building a 520/555 hybrid transaxle for my Shelby Charger. I've seen Cliff Ramsdell's site and it looks pretty straight forward. Are all the bearings, synchros, etc. the same for both transaxles?

Also, who sells a rebuild kit for the 520/555? I've only found rebuilt transaxles and not parts on TU's and FWD Performance's websites.

If you're doing the swap, all the parts should be the same just so long as you have both an 87-88 520 and 555. The 89's are different. So if you had an 89' A-520, you'd need an 89' A-555.

Forward Motion sells a rebuild kit. Most all parts are still available from Mopar as well.

Anybody have the part numbers?

I can get you any part number from 87. That's about all I can do. Dealership should be able to look up anything you need though.

You don't go to the dealerships around here without part numbers. Ordering 555 tranny parts might get you slant six valvetrain parts. :)

Since we're on the subject. What's a good tool to use to remove all these snap rings or rather what's a good snap ring removal tool to buy. I've broke about 2 already working on these damn transmissions and I find most of my frustration is in removing the snap rings.

www.drivetrain.com has rebuild kits. and I bought my snap-ring pliers at a local hardware store that has a great selection of tools, its kinda trial and error with those, cheaper ones usually break.

That's because they are LOCK rings. I made the same mistake. Lock ring pliers have 2 flat spots off the end You can see the tangs hanging off the end in the pic

You are correct sir, (in my Ed Mcmahgn voice) I got a pair (large one) of those at the same place as my snap ring pliers, the correct tool makes it easy.

Thanks Ken. I've done two transmissions now. Both have been relatively simple, it's just those damn LOCK rings ;) that drive me nuts. Just ordered pair of those LOCK ring pliers from Snap-On. Shouldn't be so bad now.

I cant really see the tip in that pic. Heres a link to several styles. Which one would be best?

Sounds like a deal to me.

ok, so by the sounds of this thread, Im guessing all the removable gears in the transmission are slip fit, heald in place with a lock ring, and NOT press fit?

Thats the reason I never rebuilt the 555 or the 520 Ive got, because I didnt know what that the gear fit was.

Their prices are pretty good too! But wow! didnt realize the syncros were that expensive!

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. I already have some Craftsman snap-ring pliers. :)

You may need a gear puller to get one of the 5th gear speed gears off. Just depends, most likely it will be the one on the input shaft that nees the puller.

The sealed bearing right next to the 4th gear speed gear is a press fit and will need to be pressed off, and then back on. All the gears, syncros, etc come off pretty easy after that.

All the taper roller bearings need to be pressed off/on. Take note of how far in the input shaft front bearing race is located in the case before you remove it, again you'll need a press. Then install it at that same depth, or preferably a couple hundredths closer to outside of the case. A press is much preferred for R&Ring the bearing race in the rear bearing support plate. The diff bearing race in the cast iron housing can be R&Red with a brass drift and a seal/bearing driver. Diff bearing in the aluminum housing can be removed by heating the housing with a torch and tapping the housing while holding it upside down, the race will fall out. Install with a bearing/seal driver. Remember to get them seated all the way. You'll chase your tail if they are not seated 100% while trying to set diff bearing preload.
