Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew how rare it was to have an 88 Shelby Z w/ a driver side air bag? Back in 1990 I bought one used and found it odd as friends who had the same car didn't have one. In searches of cars for sale I never come across one with the air bag, the always have the wheel which has more padding then the 87 and older steering wheels.

Great website for turbo info. I wish I still had that 88 or the 89 I also bought used. They were very reliable and got great gas mileage.

If you went to your local dealer they could punch in the vin and tell you what all options the car came with.

Based on Chrysler's production figures 478 came with Code "CGR" airbag.

I have one of those

The car looks like it has had the passenger door replaced with a passive
seat belt setup.......but it came that way. My Red '88 Shelby Z has
no airbag with both doors having the passive setup.

Also 531 came with Code "CGT" airbag.

I'm not sure what the difference was.

I had an 88 Shelby Z with an air bag, and it had a special fender tag on the core suport next to the normal one that said air bag system tryout. The car was sent to the crusher after all the useable parts were removed. Mine also had the passive restraint on one side and the normal seatbelt on the other.

My car didn't have the passive seatbelts. Only the driver side airbag. I guess it was pretty rare. The 89 I bought had the airbag as well but I believe they were readily available in 89.

That must be the difference between the CGR, and the CGT air bag cars. CGR cars must have the passive seatbelt on the passenger side with the standard seatbelt on the drivers side. I bet your 88 was a CGT optioned car that had the standard seatbelts on both sides.

I just picked up an 87 ShelbyZ with the 88 style lower dash and and passive belts. Must be a very late 87 build??

I also had an 87 Z with passive belts, it had the older style lower dash though.
