I found a wicked deal on slicks, 22/8.0x15". I know you guys are running 23/7.5 and 24.5/8 inch slicks so will the 1 inch thinner tire be that much of a handicap. This will be on my van, and when I get the engine dialed in, should be 350 whp.

That's the same tire I'm running on my race car. But, it's only ~220hp. With 350, you may need more sidewall for grip...

Hold out for the biggest slicks you can put under the van. I ran some borrowed 22" MT slicks and my car overpowered them easily. That was on the old motor. I also had to shift to 4th gear just before the traps (1/8th) with those slicks. With the 23" (M&H) slicks, I can stay in 3rd gear.

Kev is dead on... but even with the 23's I was in 4th gear before the 1/8 shifiing at 56-5800 rpm. (that's about 85-87mph)

Kev, what's the FD in your car? Are you running a 3.85?

How do you think the 22" slicks would work with a 3.5 fd in a charger? The guy that lives upstairs has a set for sale that I'm thinking about.

Simon, those MT slicks you found weren't on neons.org, were they?

3.85 (A555) or 3.5 (A520) fd on a stock tranny nets the exact same mph (within 1/2 mph) in 3rd and 4th gear due the the gear ratios them selves... A hybrid trans will have a "taller" gearset due to the use of the A520 3.5 fd and the A555 gears.

22" slicks will top out at about 106-108mph in 4th gear through the traps (6k rpm). I ran 22's for a year before switching the the 23's...

Are the 22" about the same size as a street tire? I'm going to have traction problems when I go to the track...I think slicks will help to remedy this to a degree.

I don't think so.

Don't forget, running and automatic with 3.02 FD. :D

But only 3 gears simon... That 302 will be topping out around 110mph or so with the tq slip...

Stock 205 50's are 23.09" tall...

Man Simon, why mess around with wimpy little slicks? I run 26x8.5x15's on my van.. I ran some 22's once, before I got my 26's and all they did was spin spin spin and netted me a GREAT 2.3 60ft LOL..

will 13" wheels clear minivan calipers on an L-body? I also know of a set of 24.5 MT's for sale for $230 brand new.

Wait on some 23" slicks. If you can, go bigger than that. I'm only running 23" slicks because the 24.5" slicks would rub my fender extensions. I wish I'd have massaged them a little for clearance before we painted them. :(

Kev,

You running a hybrid trans??

I think he's just running an a520. I'm guessing out of a CSX-t. :D

I'm running a 520. And yes it came out of a CSX-T. #666 to be exact. :)

I have another 520 and a 555. I'll be looking into building a hybrid after the house is built. I doubt I'll be doing much with the car this year. :( Didn't Reeves gain alot of ET with the hybrid tranny?

GLHSKEN

Yep... The Hybrids are awesome... I have everything to build one here at the house. Warren (CSXTRA) and I will be doing it...

I know we're screwing up a slick thread talking about trannies. :p

Do you have a list of the needed parts? A good source for purchasing the parts would be nice too. :thumb:

Likewise here...I've got the a555 and a bearing plate. The a520 parts are on the way, and I'm looking at ATB differentials right now.

You just need a same year A520 and A555... The parts will swap right in. No additional partts needed except a shim set to shim the differential correctly.

Take the A555 gear set, put it on the A520 shaft, use the A520 ringead/diff set and mate it all together.. I know I simplified it... But that's my understanding...

Simon, which FD ratio ya got in that auto? Paul Smith was damn near at redline on 22" slicks at 105 mph... thats when he switched to 26" slicks.

For reference, with the 24.5x8.5 M&H's thru an A555 (3.85:1), my shift light (6400rpm) comes on right after going thru the lights at over 120mph...

Same year? I have no clue if my two trannies were even built in the same decade. :p Does anybody sell bearings, synchros, etc. as a kit?

But how good of deal is it LOL.. My friend ran mid to low 12's on 22's in a shadow..... So there not THAT shabby...

Final drive again is 3.02, lol!

I only have 6 inch rims so I am limited to slicks, as in the 23.0 set as they specify 6 inch. The 24.5's want a 7 inch wide rim. I don't want to say where they are so no one else can jump on them, :thumb:

Ok, heres what I have found-

sidewall width tread width overall diam circ
MT's 22.0/8.0-15 (8.6) (7.9) (22.4) (70)
24.5/8.0-15 (9.6) (7.7) (24.5) (77)
M@H 23/7.5-15 (8.2) (7.3) (23.0) (73)
23/8.5-15 (9.4) (8.3) (23.0) (73)
24.5/8.5-15 (10) (8.5) (24.5) (77)

Now my 225/55R16's have a 80.9 circ and I ran some 195/50r15's and they are 71.2. And yes, they seemed really easy to spin.

So based on this, I need to run the 24 inch slicks but that means buying new wheels as they need 8 inch rims, GRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

But based on the above info, the 22's are actually quite wide at 7.9"s and he gave me the compound of L8, which is listed as good for FWD cars and requires a light burnout. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Not sure about the kit question. Ramsdell would be the best to answer it...

Kyle... for some reason, certain cars really hook well with the 22's...

Heck, we are talking about a van here... (hehehe) 106 mph would be plenty Simon!!! that's a proven 12 in a brick. :thumb:

If the deal is that good. It certainly would not be bad to get them and use them any slick is better than no slick

MT makes a 20"/8" slick for a 14" X 6" wheel.

No, won't clear the brakes. I guess if you got a custom rim maybe????

Dang, hahaha i always thought a 13x26x10 slick would look awesome.. M&H were developing one. They wanted me to test it for them, but I didn't know if I could fit a 13 inch wheel on my van so I had to pass

Now that would be cool. Whats the big deal about running 13's and won't the big sidewall hurt performance?

nope, just think of all the extra sidewall to wrinkle and aid in traction.

The l-body drag car I have planned will use a tall 13" slick. So what about the smaller brakes, I'll just take the last turnoff :D

Yes, larger sidewall, more wrinkle, more traction

Something that you may want to take into consideration if you're bordline between two different tire/wheel combos for slicks is overall weight. Rotational mass is a super easy way to reduce et's and raise MPH's.

I did fine some Fiero mags locally but ended up winning the 22's. I am paying $188 shipped so for that price, I can try them and if they end up being to short, I am sure I could easily resell them for what I paid.
