View Full Version : Thoughts on a Supra challenge?

So there's this kid that's younger than me in my tech class. He drives a 97 Supra with a 3" exhaust, CAI, cams, adj cam gears, bigger injectors, a larger FMIC with 2.5" pipes, and he's running 16.5psi. He "claims" he makes 400 or 500WHP, he doesn't remember.

Ahem, now then. I have a light little old crappy Sundance with power everything and quite a long list of mods...

T3/T04E 50 trim S2 wheel, ported head, big box plenum, big FMIC, 2.5" aluminum pipes, +40's, 255, AFPR, adj cam gear, 3" straight through exhaust, ported exh mani, and meth injection. I have most the parts here, just waiting for the intake, then once I get it tuned in I want to race him. Should be pushing over 24psi. Anyone think I can take him on the hwy?

With his setup I think he's good for high 12's. I should be able to hit low 12's with my setup.

You stand no chance...Supra's are hwy runners.

Run him from 0-80 but don't go over that. Most those Supras are pretty laggy. Make sure you have a good set of drag Radials or tires. Those cars go mid 13's stock by the way on street tires. I ran one similiar to what your planning to run and he trapped 117. Don't bet on this race but maybe you may out drive him for a bit.

Good Luck

How does about +-18 year old kid afford a 1997 Supra TT Modded anyway???

Nothing is impossible!!

Those Toys are pretty badass cars so get video!

That's not true.

It is impossible to beat a supra or skyline.

But if a skiline and supra race the skyline will win while the supra will crash into a billboard. 2 fast 2 furious allready tested this for us.

It's pretty damn hard to beat them racing dyno sheets all night long.

His car at 16.5 psi will be fairly accurately 360-380 WHP on stock twins on those mods.

If it's an auto car expect a pretty easy mid-low 12 from that at 114-118 mph.

A similarly modified car here on an auto and Nitto 555R DR's but at more boost went 12.2 @ 118 with very little tuning.

I'll get a video don't worry. Maybe I'll put the fat kid from my class in his car to tape. :thumb:

So is that the list of mods for the van or now a p-body? Either way, there is a difference between "I should be able to hit low 12's with my setup" and "I did run low 12's"

yours is a auto or 5-speed? Why hwy vs. 1/4 mile? What kinda hwy racing you doing? top end? If you plan to do anything over 100, I'd recomend to add a crapload of suspension mods to that list too...

JT, this is in my P-body now. I'm actually dumping that motor and trans out of it today. It's an auto. I know the realistics of saying you run 12's and running it. It's hard and takes a lot of work. I'm just comparing apples to apples with other people and their setups. Neither of us have ever raced these cars at the track. The way mine sits right now it ran a 14.5 with a 2.3 60'. Not bad for near stock.

That's besides the point. I was just getting everyone's idea on how fast he might be. Oh and the car already has KYB's all the way around with Suspension Technique's lower springs. It's a stiff ride.

Right on... just saying it is better to know that you can back up the talk while your saying it... street racer 101.

Stock 5-speed p-bodies run 12's with slicks not sure about automagics ;)

Sounds like you have the suspension mods started, good suspension bushings and decent alignment are a real must for highway speeds. Even with Koni's and MP springs and a good alignment on my shadow the old LCA bushings are holding it back from being controlable on the highway at higher speeds under throttle...

+1 to that, with the KYB strut/Koni shock/MP spring combo in the Omni it has a tight ride but it's a full time job keeping it straight from 115 to 130 with the stock(original) bushings.

We'll just have to see.

Not to sound like a total wuss but..consider taking it to the track.

Here's a good one! http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=692625967

This is a Greenville, SC local running the greer 1/8th mile. Ran a 7.0 at 108 after lifting because of drifting to the right. Kevin (DodgeZ) has seen him there a few times I'm sure.

I wouldn't call it wussing out, not at all. It's a no excuse timed drag race. There will be none of the "I let off at 1000 ft because....blah, blah, blah" Or " I was breaking up and need it set up right...." NO EXCUSES!

Not only that, but the advantage is in your favour. You have drag raced that car before and you know what it takes to get a good launch etc.

And lastly, do it at a track because it's legal and safer.Good luck.

If it helps I learned today that oranger is faster. In all seriousness I rode in a decent 93 eclispe (non turbo) today and the kid couldnt drive to save his life. Then some laws were broken and he learned a thing or two (Dont cry to me we went to the Mall parking lot, out in the nosebleeds and tought him how to shift)

^ Should have made his point in the orginional post.

Anyway, If you can drive you have a pretty good chance. Make sure he checks the fuse in his VTEC controler first though wouldnt want to waste all that NOS on a rematch:lol:

They sure can be held off to 150-160:nod: They do pull rather well on the big end for sure.

:amen: Da Supra can neva lose!

You know the old joke about Supras. What does a 400 horsepower, a 600 horsepower, and a 800 horsepower Supra have in common?

They all run 12's.
