Which motor has the best rear drive transmission available, 2.4 or 2.2/2.5

Well you talking stock or ablity to adapt to stock... Because with a Dakota bellhousing you can bolt up a Supra trans...

I think there are a couple possiblities. Plus with the fact that a traditional A5xx can bolt to a 2.4 with one bold missing or a bracket installed, the possiblities really are endless... I think even the 6-speed outa a new Jeep may work on the 2.4.

I was talking to the guy who is building my 41TE FWD transmission up out of my Sebring about a RWD transmission for the 2.4L, because I've been thinking about swapping a 2.4L into my '77 Datsun 280Z... He had all kinds of ideas for it. Basically he said he could build an adapter plate to connect almost any transmission I could want up to it. One that he suggested was the "NAG1" I believe... a Mercedes 5 speed RWD automatic transmission.

This guy built an RLE I think he said RWD transmission that got hooked up to an SRT-4 engine in a 32 Ford Roadster Land Speed Record car... pretty cool stuff. He said you can't get the RLE's anymore though. That's what gave me the idea for putting an SRT-4 engine into my '77 Datsun 280Z. :D

RLE? As in the 42RLE that is the current light-duty (i.e. V6) RWD Chrysler automatic transmission?

Possibly... he lives in NY (some city on Long Island), has a very thick NYC accent, and can get to talking fast when he gets excited about something... I couldn't understand half of what he said, just picked up pieces here and there, lol.

the 6 speed in the jeep is nice and I think it could handle a built 2.4.But if you have a bell housing that will bolt ot what ever engine you want with some work on finding the right cluth combo and all you could use almost any trans you wanted.

A 6-speed would be nice, It would be neat to have a manual trans that can handle min 500hp in a max 3000lb car. That supra trans is something I'll research a bit. The suggestions certainly help

i'd shy away from the NAg trans..from working at a chrysler dealer if seen far too many problems with them to even consider those in a TD.

the 42rle would probly work in a light car with out slicks under 400hp, but anything past that i would question...

For RWD manual trans you have 3 main choices.....

- 2.5L TBI Dakota w/ AX5. VERY light duty, but IIRC, you can swap to an AX15 (4.0 Jeep 91-99) and retain the 2.5 bellhousing from the AX5.

- 2.4L Wrangler/Liberty (02-04) NV3550. This trans has better ratios than the AX15 and shifts good for a truck trans.

- 2.4L Wrangler/Liberty (05-on) 6sp Daimler whatever. This trans sucks- to work on and to drive. It's VERY clunky and the overdrive is no better than the 3550. It has a good first gear for low-range offroading, but that's about it! ;)

You can still get the RLE- it's in all the Libertys (non-diesel) and the 2.7L LX cars. The NAG1 is a pretty tough trans and when it's setup with an aggressive shift schedule (like when it's behind the 6.1 Hemi or Crossfire) it's not bad. In the lame V6 Jeeps/cars, it "feels" lazy. ;)

I'm making an adapter plate for a 2.2/Ford C4, but progress is slow. 2.2 holes are not drilled yet, havent decided if I want the engine canted like stock, or sitting more upright. I also have to make a flexplate, might buy the plain ring gear, and get a flat disk cut. The holes in the center of the plate were cut with a cnc machine, the center hole fits perfectly on the crank. The hole marked around the center hole will be cut out later to clear the crank seal retainer.

Theres a 2.2/904 adapter on T.D. right now for $350.
One day I'll get the C4 thing done.:)

I used a dakota bellhousing and bolted a T-5 trans to it.

Is a T-5 trans out of a Mustang 5 litre?

Anybody know where I can find more info on the supra tranny thing.

See, the future project I have in mind would most likely be a 2.4 with a rear drive manual tranny that can hold atleast 500hp.:thumb:

My '95 Dakota 2.5 TBI has the AX-15 from the factory. I am not 100% sure which models came with the AX-15 but I am certain the '95's did.
