Multiple gauges not functioning: H/C, Speed/Trip/Odometers

Hey what's happening?

I just placed a new powerplant into my Daytona over the course of the last week, but have run into some problems with the functioning of gauges, more specifcally, entire speedometer/tripometer/odometer as well as the H/C temperature gauges.

I have checked all fuses, as well as plugged the sensor on the front of my a413 in both ways, figuring it was in wrong. Neither of these options have helped with the speedometer/tripometer/odometer readings. These all worked before I pulled my motor?

With the H/C gauge, it was not functioning when we pulled my motor out, and I therefore thought it would be the sensor that plugs in to the front of the head. However, even with the previously working sensor off of another car (minivan) on this new motor, the temp. gauge is still not registering. I don't know where to go on this one?

Any suggestions or past experiences similiar to those I am facing now?

my odometer and trip meter stopped working, ive got to fix it as well. let me know what you find out

Shelby your odo and trip meter are probably unrelated to Billy's. Your gears are prob broken in the cluster. There is a place to buy the new gears.

Billy: not sure what's going on sorry I am of no use.

Check all the fuses.

i could be wrong here, but.... the "sensor on the front of [the] a413" sounds like the neutral start safety/reverse light switch. make sure the speed sensor is plugged in, it should be on the back (firewall side).

it really sounds like you need to go through the engine wiring harness and make sure all of the connections and grounds are good and clean.

I will check that out. I thought there was a sensor on the back of the tranny but it's been too darn cold to get back under the car over the last two days.

All grounds were wire brushed/sanded lightly in order to assure no buildup was left on them. All wiring is plugged in, as we double checked that before placing battery into place.

Like I said, it just puzzles me why the speedo isn't working... I'll look into what you said though.


Any thoughts on the temperature gauge???

This info was provided to me by a fellow TD'er who knows his stuff:

In your pic, the sensor on the cylinder head just to the
left (as you look at the pic) of the distributor cover. It
has only one wire going to it. The parts manual calls it
both of these and references two different part numbers
also:

Sending unit, engine temp gauge 4504203
Sensor, engine temp 4437313

I don't know why it has two listings and two numbers for the
same item (and I am looking at the 90 factory parts manual).

The 2 wire sensor in the t-stat housing is the coolant temp
sensor and is what the SBEC looks at to see engine temp.
The two sensors are not interconnected in any way.

So, I went ahead and ordered that new sensor today and it will arrive tomorrow.

The other option I have is heading over to Heath Farquhar's house if this does not work, and we are going to run a voltmeter test on the gauge itself.

the one in the thermo housing just turns the fan on, the one to left of the distributor send your signal directly to the gauge

by the way, the speed sensor wires are very prone to breakage due to stress. the sensors themselves also like to crap out on a regular basis (though they usually fail intermittently). to top it off, the plug also likes to accumulate grime because of its location. just a few more things to check.
