Jim P. is nearly done w/ project "Fast '86 GLHS". I took a ride out to his house in MA today and all I can say is this is one of the most incredible projects I have ever seen on any TD.

He purchased a rescued/restored 1986 GLHS from Jonny B, removed and saved the numbers matching driveline, and installed a purpose-built, race-ready engine and A-555. Goal: low 11's while retaining as much of the original look and feel of the car as is possible, including full interior, stock wheels, and zero weight reduction, while at the same time building everything to show-quality specs right down to the smallest detail. Nothing has been overlooked or compromised. I have never seen a nicer '86 GLHS, and I am certain he'll get this car way into the 11's.

I thought everyone would enjoy looking at Jim's progress as much as I did. These pictures dont do the car justice. All I can say is, "...great work Jim!"

glad you guys are liking the pix.

Steve: did Carroll's #001 ever get a timeslip?

i believe June 9, 2007, will be the 1st track day for this car (TD/SRT4 Day at LVD, Lebanon, New York).

Good question and as far as I recall it has no official timeslips. It was supposed to run in the 12's but that may be an optimistic number.

Mark - you bonehead!!! I thought you were going to let me know when you were going up  You said it wouldn't be for a couple weeks!

Oh well, I guess I'll have to see it at LV on td day.

I don't know if Jim has any before pics, but here's a couple shots of the car when I bought it off the original owner back in 01...

Jonny great historic pix of the car pre-resto, the one of the engine bay is the best....talk about a transformation from the jaws of the crusher, you get the credit for that.

sorry had to make the trip yesterday. i was bored because my project is stalled due to the fact that the bag of blasting media didnt arrive on friday and i figured you were busy with the new r/t (i presume its home now?), so i killed a few hours at jim's.......but, i am going back once the car is running so i'll offer you shotgun again.....jim estimates 2 more weeks.

Uncle Antenna Sam looks very happy on your glht.

Hey , I remember my engine compartment looking like that, John wait till you see what a wetsanding and buff did to the paint. The wheels I am running are a polished centurion2 the car looks sick with them. I striped and painted the engine compartment. painted the underside of the entire car. Did all poly bushings front and rear, new brakes. The engine is a fwd performance built 2.2 with all the good parts, has a Stage 2 fwd performance head,a taft2 cam package, cometic head gasket,a fancy windagetray and crank scraper, A Alabama man header,a t3/t4 50 trim turbo to a full 3 inch exhaust, a fidanza flywheel with a 4 puck ceramic clutch kit. The engine is mounted to a 555 transmission. The fuel system is a external mounted walbro 255 pump to a afpr. Progress has been slow since I have been thrashing on my bigger mopars but I should be done soon.

I strongly belive that a car should look just as good if not better than it goes.. :amen:

Yes, Omnis (L-bodies as well) have the best advantage in HP to weight ratio.
I have a P-body and I'm jealous of the weight savings... I can strip my Shadow and it will weigh the same as a full interiored L body. I guess it's not too bad... I'm not building a G-body!:eyebrows:

11.99 is my goal, but I have to be realistic going from mid 14s to 11.99, the road in between will usually have quite a few detours.

I like seeing alot of new New Englanders coming back into this hobby.

Nice car!

This is a great looking project. I have always been a BIG fan of putting together factory looks and freakish performance. This the goal with my CSX. Unfortunately, the car has been hacked up a bit, but in time I can hope for my results to be similiar. VERY nice ride, man. Keep it up!

Glad to see that everyone likes the car, I was telling Marcus how alot of people rag on it saying it is a Fast and Furious car and this past Christmas I was told by multiple family members that I was wasting time and money.
I belive that I am preserving a piece of american history like it or not.

i doubt that can happen with this car.

i found a drag strip test of Carroll's 86 GLHS. Car Craft magazine, Jan 1988.

the article reports that his car went 14.6 at 97 mph (it was a hot day in LA for this test). the editor wrote, "...The specially prepared Shelby GLH-S is the fastest non-nitrous-oxide-assisted front-wheel-drive car we have ever tested, let alone taken to the dragstrip....."

a few good pix also, showing the Hans Herman head.

tires were D.O.T. not slicks so i suspect that, plus the hot weather, really hurt the ET.

Not saying this is the quickest GLHS but...Quackenbush's 16V Maserati powered 86 GLHS went a whole lot quicker than CS HH16V car published times. Quacks went 11.90's @ 119 first time out on less than 18 PSI at SDAC-14. Pure steet car with M&H's on it. Still had spare tire, jack and CD changer in the trunk. It also got 30.6 MPG driving it 450 miles to event. It's quicker & faster now that it had some dyno time to tune A/F.

Quackenbushes (Alan?) glhs is really super nice, perhaps the nicest that's ever been restored and that 11.90 has to be the number to beat for any '86 glhs.

Does he still have that car? Will it be at SADC-17?

Jim's and Alan's car side by side at the track would be a special treat.

Marcus,
Allan's masi powered GLHS #120 was a 40k car with original paint. Nice car. The restored one you are thinking of is my old GLHS #276 that Allan bought. That was a quick car too, but not quite that quick. Allan has since sold both cars. Ones roaming the streets of Florida the other in Michigan.

is the FM hot rod class Charger a genuine GLHS Charger or a Shelby Charger? its the fastest TD ever right? unless there's an SRT4 out there running quicker.

.....but for my money there is something very special about a true street legal car, ungutted, stock appearing on the outside, that is actually driven legally on the road, that also can post 10's and 11's at the track with only a change of the front tires. those are the best kinds of cars.

and the TD community has their share of them.

Not a street legal car FM ran 10.7's I think... Did he get to the .4's?? . And the FM car is not the fastes TM. Look to Pachner with a 10.0X for fastest and street legal.

.....i goofed, i was thinking of the SMP car (i think thats what it is), the one we see at NOPI events in Hot Rod Class, goes 8.xxx right? anyone know if the SMP car is a GLHS Charger? sorta looks like one.

I know I've never heard of a quicker street legal TD than Rob P's Charger but him and Reeves are very close as i recall.

...as for Jim's 86 GLHS I think the fact he selected an 8 valve config and 5-speed is a good thing since it is closer to the way the car came from Shelby.
