Buildup on cam lobes?

I noticed when I was inspecting my 92 TBI cam that there was a buildup of oily residue on the side of the lobes were it doesnt contact the follower. What is this? I razored it off without scratching anything, but I am just curious if it was that.

Its probably carbon, normal.
