Were are you guys going to get 180 degree t-stats?
Most parts stores around here only carry 195s and I want to go the 180 route.

I want to get an aluminum t-stat housing and put in a 180 when I'm there, but am having trouble sourcing one.

Would one out of a Chrysler small block be the same as ours?

I also plan on drilling it too, but don't have much to ask on that, just a 1/16 inch hole, and mount it hole up.

Thanks

I've used the ones from AutoZone and Advance Auto, those sucked. I would only use the ones from Napa, Car Quest, or a similer auto parts store. They are alot better quality.

yeah, you should be able to go to the parts counter and buy a 180 for any TD pretty easily.

t-stats have issues in general. Stant brand is supposed to be good, and I have not had any problems with them, but 14 years ago a Stant rep told me that they have up to 20% fall out for new parts if the parts set on the shelf for a while. Guess they get stuck shut. After hearing that, now, before installing on, I test them by pushing them open by hand and feeling if they are sticking or binding.

MP pn p4286882 Your dealer can order it, or contact me and Ill do it for ya. I would also recomend the thermostat mod while you have it out. Also if this is you daily driver I would wait till spring to do it cause your heat will suck.

I always get mine from nappa. They always have them in stock, and the request does not even raise an eyebrow. I would probably find a new parts store.

I'll have to check with Carquest then, I get a discount there, and can look up parts from home, but all they show is a 195. Maybe they have more options available if I give them a call.
If not I may just go with the one JDAWG mentioned.

I had a run there for a while where I got like 3 bad SBC thermostats in a row. Thought I had a cooling problem with the truck, but it was just the crappy t-stats sticking. I found the best way to test them, get a candy thermometer and bring water up to whatever temp the t-stat is, so say 180*, drop the t-stat in and it should open. If it doesn't take it back and chuck at parts counter guy.

Stant # for 195 is 13789
180 deg is 13788.

BTW, in the 7 years of running my shop, maybe had one or 2 bad ones, Stant that is.

Moroso sells one also that I get at summit, its a couple bucks more then the cheapies and never had a problem with them. But they're probably just re-packaged stant units.

When I worked at the local parts store, the computers and main catalogs only showed the factory temp replacements for any given car, however, there was a chart in the back of the catalogs that could translate any given part number into the lower temp equivalents. We originally carried Stant, but then switched to Murray, but both catalogs had the cross-referance. Just something to keep in mind next time they say they don't list one.

+1 on the Stant recommendation.

I've been using the same 180º Stant w/ a 1/16" hole since 2000 in two different cars for over 400,000 miles and it still works flawlessly. Though I have cleaned and checked it a few times...
