Just recently i bought a set of used 88-89 rear big brake conversion kit for my 88 lebaron. So, i have decsided to rebuild them my self so i know their working properly. my question is has anybody done them before. i found all the parts that are need its gonna cost 75 bucks to rebuild both side so i think its work it.

Do these have the parking brake as part of the caliper?
Have you priced out rebuilt calipers, there cheap, around $20 a side. The parking brake ones might be more but well worth it and probably less than $75. Its alot easier to rebuild them if you have access to compressed air, lots of brake cleaner.

yeah, parts cleaner and some form of bead blasting helps too.

Why so much? As Simon pointed out rebuilt calipers don't even cost that much.

you can get 89+ rear disc calipers at about $30-35 a piece from autozone, etc when you turn in the cores. i did that with my 90 spirit es rear disc i got for my 89 spirit es!

the fronts are even cheaper...even the RT 11" ones!

you must of misunderstood calipers for my Big Shelby big brakes are $81 with the core for one only. so, that's $190 out the door for 2 calipers from my local part shop. to do it myself will cost TOTAL of $75 for 2 calipers That's it

You got hosed. Retail Canadian there only $70 each and you guys are usually half of my retail in US funds so at the most, your should be $40 US each. I would look around.

The price sounds about right to me. Last time I upgraded the brakes on the rear of my Omni (11" vented), they were definately more expensive than the rear calipers for the 10" non-vented rotor. These can be had with phenolic or steel pistons. The steel piston calipers are a little more expensive.

Costed me $23 to rebuild my rear calipers. It's basically replacing two rubber piston seals and two dust boots. Several cans of brake clean and an afternoon time.

Where did you get the rear caliper boots? I couldn't find them for the vented rears... The 91+ 11" fronts are about $15 from autozone rebuilt with a core, and the 89 RT calipers are only $18 or so...
The vented rears I couldn't find for a reasonable price and I also couldn't find the rebuild kit.

^beat me to it^
well autozone has the rears for $36 each +$42 core each
so $80 and already done and clean
if you have the "E-brake calipers" then it could be more(I thought those were '87's, deff not '89's

new style is cheap, old style is expensive. when i was lookin on advance's website, the old style was about $90 each!

Interal drum brakes is the way to go.
My Daytona Shelby has the 11 inch vented rear disc and the GLH has the 10in non vented rear disc, both of internal drum brakes and make things easy and cheap.

I ordered the seals from Napa but they weren't right. They were just the seals for the rear drum actuator. Perhaps I had the wrong PN but I am pretty sure that I double checked to make sure they gave me the one listed for rear vented discs...
The piston is also available from checker in SS and phelonic it is the seal and oring that I couldn't find. I think I could have gotten it done at a regular brake rebuilding shop but I found a set that had good seals and used them.

Measure the pistons. It's either 33mm or 36mm.

Only thing I don't think about Pepboy is there is no pricing of stuff on their website.

Wow, $81 wholesale is expensive. The $70 I quoted is my retail and at Canadian prices so figure around $55 a caliper.
If you have access to the proper tools, sure, rebuild them. Make sure though you get the new rubber slider sleeves and new sliders as they get seized, swelled or pitted. I just find it time consuming and for me, the price of nice, clean calipers with warranty is a bonus, :thumb:

Yea I know what you mean but my boss told me that they did it all the time and its easy to do. He told me that's all they did in 80's and 90's all the time on car so he's gonna show me how.

Somebody's got to give you props for wanting to dig in and see how it works rather than just buy parts :thumb:
It's good to see the enthusiasm (sp?) :amen:

Well, for me IM going to school to get my masters in engineering and having an 88 lebaron has teached me a lot about how stuff works and how little things make a car performance good. So rebuilding calipers make me one step smarter.
For instance IM designing my own top intercooler pipe out of fence pipe. I already have a ruft design in my car now and ran it for about 6 months with NO problems so now im making another just like it but more for show as well. I'll post PICS as soon as i get it done
Thanks

I used to be like you, lol!
I am just lazy these days, I would rather just stick rebuilt ones on, ;)

well its my hobby i rather take apart a block than hang out in the streets and do something ima regret. lmao
i find it fun to fix something that was once broken and do something that people think its impossible.

Brake calipers are stupid easy. There's only one moving part, and that's the piston. To "rebuild", remove piston, dust seal and piston seal (o-ring). Clean, put in new piston seal, dust seal and piston.

Not if it has the e-brake built into the caliper, :eyebrows:

I know, just saying that if the e-brake is part of the caliper, not so simple, :p
