For the 1st aniversity of my blown headgasket my van gave to me another blown headgasket. I have a whole spare engine setting in my garage with a better head on it so I just took it apart and sent it off to the machine shop. I had all the normal crap done, sufaced, guides, cleaned, and also threw in a 3 angle valve job and back cut valves.

I plan on doing the conical valve spring and 2.4l lifter thing. Just went out today and picked up the washer for the lifters at Lowes and some chain for my engine hoist which should make this so much easier then last time. My back hurt for a good week after doing it the last time. I'll probably smooth out the intake and exhaust ports a tad. May work over the exhaust mani while its out too and I am deffinatly getting an EGT gauge.

What's the compression of the engine?

dude i think they milled to much of the head. You will get detonation when u boost the motor.

How can you tell by looking at that picture?

C'mon Carl, are you saying by looking at a 2D image you're able to estimate the depth of the 'squish' area? When we are talking rims you-da-man but you're gonna throw the poor guy into a tailspin over his C/R. Besides, machine shops don't like to make any more surfacing passes than they have to, it uses up tooling and costs them labor hours.

Darkwolf, do you have the capacity to do any portwork, maybe borrow the stuff from another member? Back cut valves are nice but they are not nearly the benefit of a little bowl work. Though it is safer to do it BEFORE the valve job, it can still be done CAREFULLY

Agreed, how can you see that. If you look at the little pad across from the spark plug, theres tons of meat between the top of it and the surface so I doubt he will have detonation issues.

I like that sprocket, looks good, :thumb:

I had to make sure he does not finish his project before i do(just kidding).By looking at his first picture i thought they milled it to much (pocket island was machined clear). Than i realized the pocket island is the next one over. Can we see a whole picture of youre bottom of youre head.

Looking at the depth of the chamfers on the corner bolt holes and locating dowel pin hole I'd say it looks fine ;)

I've surfaced a bazzillion of these heads :D

I don't have the skill to do any real port work but I will get rid of the real rough stuff. I'd probably do more damage then good if I played around in the bowl area. I totally forgot to ask how much they milled off but its fine. They did try to get me to buy brand new head because of the cracks between the valves though :).

What kind of bits does it take to work over the exhaust manifold? I figure my dremel and some sanding drums can handle the little I am going to do to the head but cast iron maybe a bit too much for those :).

Still a bit rough and I left the intake rougher then the exhaust but thats probably all I am going to do. Afraid I'll do more harm then good if I do much else.

ON the top side of the head use you grinder and knock off all the extra casting around the oil drainback area around the lifters. You will get much better oiling this was as oil will return quicker to the pump. It's easy and every little bit helps.

Not sure anybody ever posted a side by side pic of the conical setup vs stock so there you go.

And everything back together. Now I just have to pull the rest of the engine out and rebuild that :).

Nice work. Which bit did you use for cleaning up the ports?

just a dremel and sanding drums. I expected it to take awhile but it went rather quickly since I wasn't really removing any material.
