While I was cleaning the thermostat housing I noticed the tag on the transmission says A-523. I know the R/T's came with the A-568. Can you even put an A-523 on a T-III motor? Should I start looking for an A-568?

I think the only difference is the gearing/differential. Same case, as long as they're both large spline. I have a 523 on my VNT which came with a 568.

The T-III motor doesn't use a dist. It has a crank sensor in the tranny's bellhousing. So someone had to adapt that to the 523 case.

LowSL2,

A525, A520, A555, A523, A568 will all fit in a turbo dodge block, all years.

Tags are easy to change, so you'll have to check the case to see if it has the hole for the crank sensor. If not then you'll be needing a RT case at a minimum, might as well check to see if it has the correct flywheel while your at it.

Since it runs and drives it definately has the crank sensor installed.

Pull the crank sensor out and take a look at the hole in the case. If the machine work looks like someone did it in their garage then they most likely did, if it looks ok then it's probably a 568, but you can drill out a 523 case for a crank sensor if you have the proper jig made up and it looks factory. The second is unlikely, but possible, since I don't know of anyone but us that has an assembly like that.

I looked at the tag today. I got a camera phone pic but it sucks. It says A-523 at the top. 8/21/91 is the build date. Final drive is 3.77. I couldn't get a good look at the crank sensor. But it is mounted below the throttle body like on the A-568.

I always seem to get the wierd problems...

You can see it the partial vin # stamped on the trans housing matches your cars vin #. If it doesn't match then you know for sure the tranny was swapped.

If the vin matches then possibly the tag could be in error. Someone posted a 1991 525 tag on TD.com recently although the tranny was really a 555.

Where on the housing is the VIN stamped? I looked all over the top part of the housing and can't find one.

You have already posted that you have gear noise on decel... I'd be pretty sure you have a 568 with a swaped tag. It takes those monster 555/568 gears to make that gnashing noise:)

Well I think I have an A-568 after all. After cleaning all the grime off the trans I found the VIN stamp. It's a match.
