Well here's the beginning, and to me, the most important or difficult work. Taking the dang potting out! Soldering is easy for me...so that's not a concern. :eyebrows:

I'll be de-soldering the EPROM tomorrow, but until then here is what I have so far. Updates later. :thumb:

My new work-station (self-contained solder pump w/ iron full digital).

Potting removal so far.

Looks good! How'd you get the boards so clean that close to the chip? I haven't found anything to get down in there that close. I cut ~1/8" more potting out around the chip than that...

Just cut the pins on the chip and remove them one at a time. Alot easier then trying to remove the whole thing. Also there is more potting material under the chip that holds the chip in while trying to desolder.

Rob-

I brought it to work, because I have more tools available to me. We have these small plastic brushes that are used to wisk away bits and particles. Well I cut the bristles real short so they're real course. I also use a small Wiha flat-blade screw driver and pick away at the potting. Once the potting is real close to the board I use the brush to brush it clean. I just keep doing this over and over until the board is potting-free clean. In my experience a good de-solder job relies heavily on how clean the solder is.

I can send you some of those little brushes if you like. :thumb:

More pictures coming as I finished everything at work tonight. I'll post up some of those pictures in a bit.

And thanks for the compliments, and also the spare EPROM and socket!! :thumb:

Which takes no skill and ruins a perfectly good EPROM. And it happens to be my *ONLY* EPROM with a stock T-III calibration in it. I also can not be without my car.

I know full well the potting is stuck under the EPROM holding it in place. That's the reason why I clean so well before de-soldering.

I do this for a living bud...I *do* know what I'm doing. :thumb: :eyebrows:

I used Dow Corning 3140 high-temp potting compound. I have this sitting under my wife's end-table lamp *baking*. It'll likely take over-night to set.
