I've been taking a lot of pics with my new camera while working on the Shelby Charger, and thought I'd share some.

First things first. The parts:

New top end gaskets, a socketed LM, and a PB front mount in a powdercoated bracket.
http://xs307.xs.to/xs307/06396/toys.JPG (http://xs.to)

Powdercoated cam gears, heat shield, PS bracket, motor mount brackets, thermostat housing, and heater pipes, along with a set of +40's, windshield decal, and my re-re-refreshed cylinder head. The head is a mildly ported piece that I had on my CSXT and on my Shelby Z. A stupid mistake on my part allowed it to get a bit hot, so I had to have a few small cracks welded and have it resurfaced again.
http://xs410.xs.to/xs410/06490/IMG_0030.JPG (http://xs.to)

And being as it has been resurfaced a couple times, I got one of these as well.
http://xs110.xs.to/xs110/06490/IMG_0032.JPG (http://xs.to)

New Turbos Unleashed 3" cat back system, along with an ATR Pittbull muffler. Not pictured is the TU 3" downpipe.
http://xs110.xs.to/xs110/06490/IMG_0024.JPG (http://xs.to)

Set of PT Lifters and spacers.

And now the assembly pics . . .

When I had this engine in my Shelby Z, I had slightly questionable oil pressure at hot idle. Guess what I forgot to check when I assembled it? Sure enough, when the head came off, there was no restrictor in the block. Ordered a new one up from the dealer.
http://xs410.xs.to/xs410/06512/IMG_0086.JPG (http://xs.to)

And now we're happy.
http://xs410.xs.to/xs410/06512/IMG_0087.JPG (http://xs.to)

Here's me reinstalling the ARP head studs. Behind me is my brother's brand new '07 50th anniversary Sportster, #1547 of 2000 made. I'm so jealous. To my left is my roomate's sadly neglected '68 Mustang coupe.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v346/gbpackersfan2004/turbododge024r.jpg

The copper head shim just looks cool.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v346/gbpackersfan2004/turbododge036r.jpg

Cylinder head bolted down and valvetrain installed.
http://xs210.xs.to/xs210/06516/IMG_0075.JPG (http://xs.to)

At O'Reily's, you can get these Dorman nickel plated bolts that are a perfect replacement for valve cover bolts, water pump bolts, etc. They even use the correct 10mm head.
http://xs210.xs.to/xs210/06516/IMG_0092.JPG (http://xs.to)

Part number 980-225 for a pack of four. They also come in black oxide for the purists. ;)
http://xs210.xs.to/xs210/06516/IMG_0094.JPG (http://xs.to)

A large portion of my time yesterday was spent refinshing my water pump housing. Cleaned up, degreased, and coated with aluminum colored engine paint. Here it is getting the finish baked on on the garage's wood burning stove.
http://xs210.xs.to/xs210/06516/IMG_0091.JPG (http://xs.to)

And finally, the fitting installed for the #4 coolant mod. My idea for this looks really good in my head, I hope it turns out the way I plan it.

Lol, she was supposed to be running by the end of October, but you know how that goes. After all the work I put into repainting the engine bay (see my gallery), I want to make sure this engine is spotless before it goes in. I'm about to go over the whole thing with some rags and degreaser today, should be fun.

supercrackerbox
12-24-2006, 10:35 AM
And here's yesterday's progress:

Two piece intake. I was amazed at how filthy this got in only 2000 miles. It looks a lot better here, but still needs a lot of work.

http://xs210.xs.to/xs210/06510/IMG_0097.JPG (http://xs.to)

Finally everthing is back in place. I had to helicoil yet another intake bolt hole, making it the fourth one on this head. I swear next time that head comes off, I'm just going to helicoil all of them and be done with it.

http://xs210.xs.to/xs210/06510/IMG_0098.JPG (http://xs.to)

Now here's what I was talking about with the coolant mod. I'm actually really excited about how this turned out. I had some 1/4" stainless steel tubing leftover from when I did new fuel lines on my Daytona years ago, and thought I'd put it to use.

http://xs510.xs.to/xs510/06510/IMG_0099.JPG (http://xs.to)

As you can see, I still have a lot of cleaning to do. The bends didn't turn out quite as good as I had hoped, but I'm still quite pleased. On a side note, that thermostat housing is a cast iron Murray replacement piece from the local parts store. Not nearly as cool as the billet ones from TU, but still a pretty decent piece for $10.

http://xs510.xs.to/xs510/06510/IMG_0100.JPG (http://xs.to)

It's a pretty tight fit thru there, but it does clear the heater pipe.

http://xs510.xs.to/xs510/06510/IMG_0102.JPG (http://xs.to)

And a nice front view.

http://xs510.xs.to/xs510/06510/IMG_0101.JPG (http://xs.to)

More to come after the holidays . . .

Essentially all I did was stick my finger up into that water jacket so I knew how far it went, and then just drilled progressively larger holes. I ended with a 7/8" bit, and the tap is 1/4" NPT.

Thought I had a pic of it before it was all put together, but this is how it ended up.

Thanx for the comments guys. Currently I'm in the process of re-covering the wiring harness along with the mods to upgrade to TII. I also have all the plastic pieces underhood (wiper motor cover, blower intake cover, headlamp wiring protectors, etc.) all cleaned up and painted with black trim paint. I sanded, filled, and painted the mirrors too. The mockups I've done look awesome, but I'm waiting until I get the pinstripes laid in there to put it all back together. I have a friend who used to work at a vinyl decal shop who does awesome work, but he's currently an OTR truck driver working for a U.S. Mail contractor, so he hasn't had much free time with the holidays. Luckily for me at least, my job will be swiching to 12 hour shifts starting next week, so I'll be alternating 3 or 5 days off each week, which will allow me a lot more time to work on this.

Dude, somewhere I have pics of me from my junior year in High School wearing that shirt! I got it at Sokol on the Ixnay tour, and got Noodles and Dex to autograph my Smash CD at that show. I loved the Offspring until the Americana album came out, that's about when they just got too Pop sounding for me.

But yes, I definately still want to work something out. Like I said above, every other weekend will now be a three day weekend for me, and I'm all about pulling 24+ hour stints on my days off. In fact, when the pic of me putting the studs in was taken above, I was sitting right at 24 hours, and it was only about 11 at night. I was still up until sunrise the next day. So I can come out to Persia any morning and get something done, or we bring something to my place, whatever you want to do. Once the Charger is on the road, I'll be bringing my Regal home too, so the Daytona can be off the road for as long as it takes. She needs a break and some definate TLC anyway.

Okay, last night I painted the alternator bracket and a few other odds and ends. I would like to have left it the natural aluminum, but lets face it, things get dirty down there, and bare cast aluminum sucks to keep clean. It was freshly sandblasted last year, and already it was showing signs of corrosion. I also spent a couple hours with a rag, a toothbrush, and some Zep cleaning up the engine. I even polished the core plugs. :blah:

Finally I installed the powder coated distributor sprocket, motor mount bracket, and powersteering pump bracket.

http://xs511.xs.to/xs511/07012/IMG_0139.JPG (http://xs.to)

http://xs511.xs.to/xs511/07012/IMG_0141.JPG (http://xs.to)

Now I have to figure out a way to clean up that transmission. I'll probably end up throwing it on the work bench and going at it with the toothbrush and some carb cleaner and then painting it.

yeah, there were some good songs on american a yet, they were just too heavily overshadowed by thier radio hits. I saw them on the warped tour this year and was blown away. they played most of their set off of Smash, also played some ixnay and ignition.

"There is a fine line between personal hobby and mental illness."

Well, I did it. Ray and I got the tranny off of the engine and threw it up on the work bench. I spent the night scrubbing away with Simple Green, brake cleaner, and Acetone.

I should remember to crack a window next time.

PICS!

While I've seen much dirtier, this is still wholly unacceptable. In the category of too much info, the crusty yellowish deposits by the selector housing are the droppings of a snake that took up residence in my Shelby Z last year.

I would do it with the head off and look at where the cooling passage is back there. Don't go too far back or you could hit the head bolt passage.

I've got a pretty good run down of it in this thread: http://boostedmopar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8068 Keep in mind this is not at all my idea; others figured this out long before me. I just wanted a way to do it that was shiny. :D

Yeah, I did it with the head off. Basically I stuck my little finger in the coolant passage to judge where I needed to drill. I started with a small 3/16" bit and worked my way up to the 7/8" bit before I threaded the hole.

I haven't made any real progress lately between the weather, working overtime every weekend, and all the little problems that have been popping up on the Daytona. But hopefully this weekend I'll get some more done, and I'll have more pics.

supercrackerbox
04-16-2007, 02:17 PM
Yeah, I looked all over for the pre-printed stuff, and it simply is not available.

Any competant decal shop should have the stuff, I got mine from Auto Trim & Accessories in Omaha. It's a Silver 3/4" stripe with Garnett 1/4" and 3/16" stripes laid over the top. I do wish I had waited to clearcoat the engine bay though, and put the clear over the stripes as well.

Skibbe

Cool. All my factory stuff is off the car. I was hoping to just do the 1/4" in silver, outside of the painted skunk stripe... but the color separation doesn't line up close enough from the hood to the nose. I need that 3/4" of leeway that the factory stripe covered up!

Should work in theory, curious to see how it the finshed product feels.

How is the clearance between the compressor housing and the shift linkage, looks pretty tight in the pictures.

Kurt, in case you didn't notice Adams car has a 555 in it, although the concept would be similar on the 525 in your GLH. I'm looking into building a rod linkage - short throw shifter for my GLH this winter, so if your looking for one let me know and I'll build two.

Is the crack all the way through?

I'm pretty sure it is. I plan to leave it in the car and drive it (nicely) to the shop and have it welded there. With everything bolted together, I think it would be better for preventing any shifting or warpage.

Dave, there's plenty of clearance to the turbo, but I think that top rear bolt hits the firewall as it sits. I'll definately have to do something about that. And yes, something is amiss as I can at the moment only have R-1-2 or 3-4-5, but not all at the same time. But the throws are roughly a little more than half of stock length. Wouldn't have minded a little shorter, but I didn't want to go too far and risk missing gears under WOT.

Also, the PB bobble strut is about 3/4" off, I'll have to re-drill the top hole to better align it.

Other than that, I'd say my biggest obstacle left is going to be fabbing up IC and intake piping. I have the bottom radiator relocation bracket about done, and the top ones should be fairly simple. Gotta finish the battery wiring, swap injector harnesses, and all the standard button up stuff.

And exhaust, gotta finish that too.

Kurt, in case you didn't notice Adams car has a 555 in it, although the concept would be similar on the 525 in your GLH. I'm looking into building a rod linkage - short throw shifter for my GLH this winter, so if your looking for one let me know and I'll build two. build 3. i'll take two! if you need some stuff machined or custom welded etc... a good friend of mine is a great fabricator.

It's a cast iron Murray replacement from O'Reilly's. Got tired of the stamped ones not sealing, so I have one on my Daytona as well. The one on the Charger is powdercoated. The hardware for the housing and valvecover are chrome pieces also from O'Reilly's.

That part of the bell housing is not in tension with the block, right? Similarly, it does not carry loads for the transmission proper either, right? If it carries any loads at all, it would be sort of circumferential, right? So . . . . while it's not good, I don't think it is a big problem. And, it is accessible for a quick heliarc too.

A little more progress . . . Great for marking my 1000th post! (Man I am such a slacker)

I've relocated the battery to the passenger side, and am using a spill-proof 10.5lb. motorcycle battery. Also, I plan to run the higher amp Chrysler alternator as opposed to the stock L-body one, so my charger harness needed to be re-worked.

I didn't get any step by step pics, but this pic shows the 4ga. cable from the negative battery terminal spliced into the negative end of the alternator harness. I also ran a new cable from there to the ground on the side of the head, using soldered on connectors.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0789.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0790.jpg

Here's the battery set up. I can thank my brother for the charging idea. He recently asked me to install a harness for a battery tender on one of his Harleys before putting them away for the winter, and while doing so I thought the same harness would work great for the car. So I bought a harness, borrowed his charger, and good to go!

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0791.jpg

And this is the harness all wrapped up and in place. I need to devise a way to secure that negative cable over the alternator bracket, but shouldn't be too difficult. You can also just barely see the ignition coil, which I mounted on the cylinder head above the alternator bracket since the battery is now taking up the coil's spot.

Radiator mounts, part 1:

In order to route the piping for the above shown intercooler, I need to move the GLH/SC TI radiator just a couple inches to the passenger side. Now, I don't know if this is common on factory radiators, but the one I'm using from Advance Auto has removable mounts- very similar to the intercooler bracket mounts on the TII radiators.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0795.jpg

Well I reached for one of the ever-useful aluminum strips from Menards, and after a little work, came up with this:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0793.jpg

This bolts to the bottom of the radiator, and moves the mounting plugs over to use the factory holes. The plugs are just threaded onto a pair of old valvecover bolts threaded into the aluminum. I put a dab of lock-tite on each one to make sure they stay put.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0794.jpg

I have a very generous helping of anti-seize on the mounting nuts to hopefully fight galvanic corrosion.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0796.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0799.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0798.jpg

That welded piece is there to stiffen it up, with a rubber bumper under the endtank.

I'll have the upper mounts in a couple days.

Upper radiator mount is done. I started with a 12"x24" sheet of aluminum, and a couple more 1" wide x 1/8" thick aluminum strips. I cut the sheet down to the width of the radiator support, notched it to clear the fill cap, and cut the other side down to the width of the radiator core. I then wrapped a piece of the aluminum strip into each side, and then riveted it in place. Then it was just a matter of bending it to fit, and threading in the mounting bolts, so it mounts in exactly like stock. Here's the finished result:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture004.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture002.jpg

Next came the fan shroud. I'm using a Flex-a-Lite slimline fan, but I really don't like the idea of using those through-the-core straps that they supply. I had a roll of black sheet plastic that they sell at dirt track race shops, and essentially cut a piece long enough to cover the fan housing with a hole in the middle, and heated it with a small butane torch to make the 90 degree folds on the top and bottom to attach it to the radiator. I used some stainless #12 screws and wingnuts to attach the fan to the shroud, and used another 1/8" thick strip along the top for strength. It bolts in exactly like stock- clips on the bottom and 8mm bolts and clip nuts on the top.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture008.jpg

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture012.jpg

Added bonus- A stock Daytona upper radiator hose fits perfectly, so I won't have to find a piece of pipe to make it shorter or longer. Hopefully the bottom one will be the same way.

And one last photo of the remote jump start terminal for the positive side:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture011.jpg

ROFLMAO!

I'm close, real close. I have to finish piecing together the exhaust, install the taillights, finish centering the engine, fill the fluids, and route the vacuum lines. That will get her running and to the shop to have that transmission welded and the alignment done. I still have to fab the intercooler plumbing, but once I have it layed out, I still have to order the silicone couplers, so I'm going to run late TI style to get it there while I'm waiting. But yeah, I'm real real close.

But while I'm here, more updates! . . . and the peasants rejoiced. Yay!

A couple weeks ago, I was getting ready to install the heater hoses and plugging in the speedo cable, and noticed that one of the tie straps holding the heat shield on the starter had slipped off. Also, I never was happy with the routing of the starter harness, so I pulled it all out and redid it. I had to lengthen the power cable, and then rewrap it all again. The bracket holding it to the tranny is actually the one that came off the brake booster that holds the heater hoses in place. The cover is just a piece of the same plastic I made the fan shroud out of. I think this routing looks a lot better, and everything is nice and secure. Plenty of clearance in the back for the shift linkage, and a lot more room off of the turbo snout.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/IMG_0839.jpg

Next came the alternator. Now when I was mocking up the radiator supports, I hung an empty Chrysler style alternator casing from the engine to make sure I had enough room. When I went to get an alternator however, the core I had on the shelf was one of the Bosch style ones. Same mounting, same wire hookups, so I thought it would work. Dropped it off at a very reputable local rebuild shop, and $70 later I had a very nice alternator. They even blasted the casing and painted the fan and pulley. Little did I realize, the Bosch unit is a solid inch wider than the Chrysler one. Needless to say, the radiator no longer fit. So I had to swap it with the one on the Daytona, and clean up the Daytona's alternator to make it somewhat presentable.

Got plenty of room now.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture014.jpg

Also, I got the taillights painted. I started by polishing the plastic as best I could. I want these lights to glitter when I show them to Kaleb. ;) Masking was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I picked up a roll of 10mm fine line masking tape from Hobby Town, and masking took about 20 minutes apiece. The SEM paint didn't lay down nearly as nice as I would have liked, but I'm guessing that was due to the temperature in the garage more than anything, it was a bit on the cold side. Still, they look a hundred times better than before.

Before paint, the factory finish is nearly worn off:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture013.jpg

And after (I did both lights so they match):

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture015.jpg

Okay, FYI- If you're planning on cleaning out the fuel tank with acid, save it until right before the car is ready to run. Don't do it a year before the car is ready to run.

Ya know, I had the whole story almost all typed up, but I'd been up for almost 40 hours and just couldn't finish it. But here it is.

I was hell bent on having the car running by Saturday evening, so I went out after work Friday night. Ray even came and helped out until around 5am. We got the airbox on (running TI until I can make the intercooler piping), vacuum lines routed, and all the wiring hooked up. Ray in his infinite wisdom decided to run power to the positive coil terminal to see if the fuel pump would prime. It made a sound like a cat dropping dead, and that was it. Tapped on the fuel tank with a hammer handle, and could hear the rust rattling around. I had installed the Walbro 255 from my CSXT when I cleaned it out last year. So I had to both clean out the tank again, and figure out where to get a 255 pump locally on a Saturday. I didn't want to just buy a stock one, because that would be money thrown away. But we'll get back to that.

The other two things I needed were the intermediate pipe for the exhaust, and the passenger side axle. I started cleaning up my brake rotors until around 8am and called the exhaust shop and told them what I needed. On the way there, I stopped at O'Reilly's to pick up the third axle. The first one they got in for me had messed up splines, so it wouldn't fit in the hub. So I had them order in another one (non-stocking item) and exhanged it. This one fit in fine, but was somehow too long. My engine is pushed over to the limit of the mounts, and there was still no play in the axle. Driven like that, it would have self-destructed in no time. So I told them to order another one, hoping third time would be the charm.

They never ordered it. Be Tuesday before they could get it in at that point. And to make matters even worse, the counter jockey (who used to be the head manager before he got demoted for being a piece of $#!*) acted like he couldn't have even cared less. Not even so much as an apology. I'd gladly take my business elswhere, but they already took my core a month ago. Needless to say I was furious. I always wanted to kick the crap out of this guy anyway, so I left before I actually did.

From there I made my way to the exhaust shop, picked up my pipe, and then stopped at Speedway for a tank cleaner/sealer kit, and got to work on pulling the fuel tank. While I was waiting for the acid to do its thing, I called my buddy Justin to tell him what was going on. He asked the obvious question "What, you don't have a spare pump laying around?" DUH. That Walbro was in my CSXT, and I still had the factory pump wrapped in a bag on the shelf. So I sloshed the acid around a bit more, and went to my storage garage to grab it. Now I just had to find a strainer sock for it. None of the parts stores had anything in stock that would fit it. I even had them look one up for a Mustang. And I was not even going to go back to O'Reilly's, I was still too mad at them. Then I remembered that I still had the kit that came with the pump I put in the Daytona in October. So, back to the storage garage again, and it had a sock that would work. Meanwhile, Ray had found an old spare axle from his GLHT that he brought over, and while I got to work installing the pump, he put in the axle and buttoned up the suspension. Got the fluids all filled, got the tank put back up, got the intermediate pipe installed. The rest of the exhaust is still off the car, because I couldn't get the tank back up with it there. Really didn't care at that point, it was already past 9pm. Finally we were ready to start the car. Hooked everything up, turned the key to ON and . . .

. . . the solenoid bank started clicking like mad. I've run into this once before. The LM is toast. We went over all the wiring, grounds, everything just to be sure, but it was all good. We pulled the LM out of Ray's car to give it a shot, and finally the car ran. But of course he needed the LM back, so the car still isn't going anywhere for a while.

Wow, sorry I didn't even see this post til just now. Essentially, you want both axles to compress the same amount on each side, usually about 5/8"-1". If one is considerably different than the other, loosen the two bolts on the passenger side mount where it bolts to the frame, and the two bolts and two nuts that hold the large U bracket to the radiator support on the front mount. Then use a large pry bar to move the engine to one side or the other until the axles are equal. That part made my stomach churn putting a pry bar against the paint in the engine bay. The problem I was having was that the engine was as far to the driver's side as possible, and there was still no compression in the passenger side axle.

But I guess third time's the charm, I finally got one that fit perfectly. The car finally moved under its own power, and I dropped it off at the shop this morning for an alignment and to have the crack in the bellhousing welded. We ended up cleaning the fuel lines out by using an old fuel pump to pump diluted muratic acid through the lines, which we did until the pump died. Then we followed with a water rinse, compressed air, and then finally some acetone. Runs a whole lot better now.

I still have a long way to go though. The shifter still isn't adjusted quite right, so I don't have 5th gear, I still have to fab up the intercooler piping, and I want to redo the vacuum lines to eliminate that vacuum manifold.

Then comes the interior. The ignition switch needs to be either adjusted or replaced, because there's no power to the cooling fan unless it's turned just right. The heater fan runs constantly regardless of the controls, and the ventilation system just stinks. Bad. So I'll be pulling the dash out to completely clean and sanitize the HVAC plumbing like I did on the red Daytona. Then gauges, stereo, headliner, door panels, and possibly carpet, and maybe even a new back seat. Turns out I wasn't missing the driver's door armrest afterall, it was sitting in the back seat. Which was folded down. For two years.

There's a pretty nasty imprint in the vinyl.

And another long overdue update- Interior work!

I don't think the interior of this car had been thoroughly cleaned since the car was new. Ray and I spent an entire night pulling the seats and carpet out of the car and scrubbing it all clean. Or as clean as it was going to get anyway. Not perfect, but an insane improvement.

Under the carpet was an unsuprising disappointment. What I thought was a rust free car was not quite.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o298/supercrackerbox/charger/Picture009.jpg

The driver's floor was of course the worst of it. No major holes, but lots of little pinholes, most of which were directly above the subframe rail, which is why I never saw them from below. The rear passenger floor also had standing water under the carpet, and rust was forming around all the body sealer. The other two pans only had minimal damage. Not taking any chances, the floor plugs and all the body sealer were removed, and everything was thoroughly cleaned with a wire brush followed by acetone. I then coated everything with a pint of Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator, allowed it to dry for a day, and then reinstalled the floor plugs and some new body sealer provided by Kaleb.

Couple that with the new headliner and re-covered sun visors, some well placed sound deadener, and my interior is a million times nicer, the nicest I've ever had. We also took the opportunity to thoroughly clean all the glass, repaint the shifter and e-brake handles, installed a re-covered armrest, and replaced most of the interior screws with new stainless steel pieces.

And bonus stuff! I FINALLY got my intercooler plumbed. The pipe is 2.25" mandrel bends from Racing Solutions, painted with the same aluminum paint used on the tranny and all the brackets. The couplers were all purchaced at www.siliconeintakes.com (still need to order the t-bolt clamps though). The filter is a large by huge K&N I picked up locally ($30 was a steal!), and the inlet hose is from Spectre. It's cheap, but it works well, and is easy to route in the tight engine bay.

Very Nice! Between the engine bay and the interior that really changes the look of the car. Cant wait to see it in person!

How does it run?

I think that you are goig to have me wooped in the performance department until I do my turbo swap:eyebrows:

Just the interior work made it feel like a completely different car! The factory sound deadener above the headliner board disintegrated upon removal, and I learned from the CSX-T that it's nice to have, especially in the rain. So along with the speaker surrounds and a couple other choice spots, I also covered the whole ceiling with the ebay knockoff dynamat. Also, before I even installed anything, I scrubbed out the whole interior with some hot water and Lysol. Now that everything is clean and installed correctly, the stereo sounds 10x better, and there's no squeaks, rattles, or funky smells. It is finally a true pleasure to drive.

As for the engine- I still need to swap out the fouled plugs, dial in the fuel pressure, fix an exhaust leak at the donut, and I'm still only set at 10psi . . .

. . . and she still runs like a raped ape!

when the rust on the floor starts to bleed up the firewall and into the rockers/front wheel wells then your introuble!!!

my SC was just going to that point, the shitty factory seaming job between the 2 panels doesnt help with moisture any, and i just recently looked at a charger thats been garaged parked for FIFTEEN years and them floors had rust on them too!!!

anywho looks good, nice job keepin it up to snuff!

Yeah, luckily the rust ended at the seam between the floor and firewall. I was kinda suprised how poorly those two panels fit together. In some spots the gap was over 1/4", and just packed full of seam sealer.

That is pretty typical of 80's unibody manufacturing. I think the cordoba/mirada saga had to be the worst. That was just surface rust though. And really its a pretty rust free car as even cars made as recent as 96 have that issue as you almost always have water buildup under the carpet. Its inevitable and unless its never seen rain good luck finding a car that old without this. As far as you mentioned replacing the floors that sounds like a lot of grief for merely surface rust. If that stuff you used works as good as POR15 the odds of you EVER having to replace the floors if the car never sees road salt is probably going to outlast you. That interior is absolutely envious. I hope I can have an 80's turbo car one day with an interior that nice. Good luck on the rest of it. Looks like its in good hand.

That stripe is pretty darn cool. The more and more I look at it, the more and more I like it. All you need is an Exterior paint job and that thing will be cherried out.

Tell me about it. I've put a lot of work into getting the scratches out and getting a good shine to it, but really the whole body is crap. The hood and doors are full of dings, the roof has the typical oxidation in the silver paint, the fenders look like some sort of acid or solvent got spilled on them, and this spring it was outside during a bad thunderstorm and the whole passenger side got sandblasted by the wind picking up the sand and gravel left over in the parking lot from winter.

Really, the car is only a 20 footer.

Ha, better not. I've got too much time and money in this engine for anything like that.

Although I do have a bit of a leak coming from the rear cam seal. Sucks. My engines don't leak. Ever.

lucky you, i got a 1 way check valve with crankcase evac, no EGR, and i still got blow by WTF

it aint too bad, 7 passes down the strip with 130 miles there, then back home, and i lost about a 1/4 of a quart.....just ticks me off considering its a pretty new motor...maybe that evac is messed up

I ain't done yet!

Finally.

Here's a pic with the factory 15s and their crappy, dry-rotted, mismatched tires:

And the new(er) 16" Daytona Shelby wheels with the Firehawk Wide Ovals. So far I LOVE these tires!

Car still sits a touch lower in the rear compared to the front. Working on a solution for that.

Special thanks to Kaleb for painting the wheels for me!

Looks great. Where did you get the coil and did you have to do anything different, like reprogram the computer to read it differently? I have no idea how that stuff works, so I'd like to know. I may change mine out as well.

You mean the ignition coil? Got it off a early 90's Shadow in the junkyard. All I had to do was splice the new connector onto my old wires, although I did have to extend them quite a ways. As for the coil-to-distributor wire, it's a GM HEI wire that I shortened to fit. That's why it's a different color.

I just got done rubbing the Charger down with the clay bar. Yes, I realize it's 4:30 in the morning. In doing so, I noticed that the Garnett portion of the roof is starting to oxidize. The Silver started doing it long ago, I've made my peace with that. But the Garnett (on the roof at least) was near perfect.

It's all down hill from here.

Do you have the tailpipe installed after the muffler? I cant tell in some of these pics. If you don't make sure you get it on there right away to avoid warping your rear bumper from the hot exhaust fumes.
